Finally saving up enough for a beastly 4K build! Honestly so hyped to leave my old laptop behind. My budget is roughly 600-700 bucks for the processor alone, and I really want to future proof this thing so I dont have to upgrade for at least a few years. My desk space is tiny so I had to go with a pretty compact case, hope that wont be a huge heat issue?
Anyway Im stuck choosing between the Ryzen 7 7800X3D and the 7950X3D. Everyone keeps telling me the 7800X3D is the king of gaming, but Im kinda worried that if I ever try streaming or editing videos, the 7950X3D might actually be worth the extra cash. I dont want to waste money if the extra cores dont do anything for 4K frames though. Also looked briefly at the 9950X but it seems like overkill and maybe runs way hotter?
Does the 7800X3D really hold its own in 4K or am I going to regret not getting those extra cores later down the line? Really just want to get the parts ordered by end of next week before my vacation starts and I have time to actually build this mess...
TL;DR: Just grab the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core Processor and call it a day. In my experience, if you are mostly gaming at 4K, the extra cores on the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D 16-Core Processor are just gonna sit there doing nothing. You are paying for overhead you wont touch. Since you are in a tight case, definitely save the cash and put it toward a really solid cooler like the Noctua NH-U12A chromax.black 120mm CPU Cooler or a decent AIO if you have the clearance. Heat management in compact builds is a headache, and the 7800X3D runs way cooler than the 7950X3D. Honestly, streaming is easy on modern GPUs via NVENC anyway, so dont let that influence your CPU pick too much. Enjoy the build!
@Reply #1 - good point! Honestly, the 7800X3D really is the sweet spot for gaming, but let me add a bit of caution since you mentioned a compact build. > My desk space is tiny so I had to go with a pretty compact case, hope that wont be a huge heat issue? If you go with the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core 4.2GHz, you are definitely getting the best gaming performance per watt, which matters a ton in a small form factor case. I have tried many builds over the years, and cramming a hot chip into a tiny chassis is asking for thermal throttling. The 7950X3D or the new AMD Ryzen 9 9950X 16-Core 4.3GHz draw way more power and dump a lot more heat, which might force your fans to run at max speed constantly. In my experience, 4K gaming is almost entirely GPU bound anyway, so those extra cores on the 7950X3D wont give you any extra frames. Unless you are running heavy productivity workloads or encoding 4K video for hours every day, the 7800X3D won't bottleneck you. Just make sure you pair it with a really solid low-profile cooler like the Noctua NH-L9a-AM5 Low-Profile CPU Cooler or an AIO if you have the clearance. Save that extra cash from the CPU and put it toward a better GPU—that's where you'll actually notice a difference at 4K resolution.
Honestly, grab an AMD chip from the X3D lineup and you will be set for years! I personally think the 8-core option handles 4K gaming like an absolute champ, and you wont see much of a difference in frames with the higher end stuff. Dont stress the extra cores unless you are doing heavy production work daily. It is a fantastic choice for a compact build!
