im so excited because i just started my first remote job ever and i finally get to work from coffee shops here in chicago!! but honestly my neck is already killing me after like three days of hunching over my little macbook air 13 inch. i heard i need a laptop stand to help with my posture but i literally have no idea what im looking for. sorry if this is a super basic question i just dont want to buy the wrong thing. it needs to be really portable because im gonna be carrying it in my backpack every day to different cafes.
here is what im looking for:
i saw some that look like little metal sticks and others that are like big plastic plates and i have no clue which one actually helps your neck more or if they all do the same thing? also do i need a separate keyboard if i use one of these stands because it seems like typing would be weird if the laptop is way up in the air? im totally lost lol. if anyone has a favorite brand or even just a link to one they use that would be awesome...
I have spent years testing remote setups in different cities, and honestly, those stick style stands are way better for portability. Over the years, I have tried many bulky plastic plates, but they just take up too much room in a bag. In my experience, something like the iVoler Laptop Stand Adjustable Aluminum is the way to go. It is incredibly light, fits a MacBook Air perfectly, and is well under your budget. The main reason these help is by bringing the display up to eye level, which stops that tech neck hunching. But here is the catch: you 100% need a separate keyboard. Typing on an elevated laptop is terrible for your wrists and feels super awkward. I usually suggest a thin one like the Logitech Pebble Keys 2 K380s to keep your bag light. If you try to use the laptop keyboard while it is on a stand, you are just trading one ergonomic disaster for another... so definitely grab both.
