So I am finally doing it!! My friends and I are planning this massive camping trip out near the Deschutes National Forest in Oregon next month and I am the one tasked with finding all the gear like the big 10-person tent, the stoves, all the dehydrated meals, the whole nine yards. There is 8 of us total so it is a huge operation and we have a collective budget of about 1200 bucks which sounds like a lot until you realize how expensive good sleeping pads are. I have been spending literal hours on sites like REI and Amazon and even some niche camping stores like Backcountry and my browser tabs are just a total mess right now lol it is honestly kind of overwhelming.
I really need a way to just bundle everything up in a neat little package and send the whole cart to my buddy Dave because he is the one with the group fund and the corporate card who is actually clicking buy on everything. I did a bit of digging and I read that Share-A-Cart is supposed to be the gold standard for this but then I saw some recent forum posts saying it doesnt always work with certain retailers or it misses the specific quantities you set. That would be a total nightmare if we end up with 1 sleeping bag instead of 8 when we get to the trailhead... I also checked out this thing called Basket but that seems way more like a save for later Pinterest vibe and I really just need a direct send this cart to someone else so they can pay button.
Does anyone know if there is an extension that actually works across multiple different sites reliably? Or maybe one that lets two people add stuff to the same cart in real time? I am so hyped for this trip because we havent all been together since before the pandemic but the logistics of everyone agreeing on which stove to get is driving me nuts and I just want to send a finished cart and say here, this is the one. Is there anything better than just sending a dozen individual links in a group chat?
Oh man, Deschutes is gonna be absolutely legendary!! I did a trip out there last summer and the stars are just insane, you guys are gonna have the best time. For the cart situation, honestly, Share-A-Cart is still the powerhouse tool even with the bugs people mention. It works by scraping the site data, so when a store like REI updates their layout, the extension sometimes glitches on the quantities. Another route is using Amazon's 'Invite to Edit' list feature for the gear you find there. It is way more stable than any extension because it is native to their platform. You can all add stuff together and then Dave can just move the whole list to his cart. For the niche sites like Backcountry, you might just have to double-check the Share-A-Cart quantities before he hits pay. It is still way better than 50 separate links! If you want to be 100% safe, just keep a quick shared sheet with the links and quantities as a backup. Boring, I know, but it saves lives when you are miles from civilization and realize you are missing a stove. TL;DR: Share-A-Cart is the best for variety, but use native Amazon lists for that portion of the budget to avoid quantity errors. I tried a few methods, but Easy Cart Share is the most straightforward one I've found so far for Walmart.
