Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to a new ultrabook that only has two USB-C ports, and I'm really struggling to manage all my peripherals. I've been looking for a solid multi-port hub, but the market is so flooded with options that it's hard to tell what's actually reliable versus what's just junk.

I use my laptop for a mix of office work and some light photo editing, so I have a few specific requirements in mind:

  • 4K HDMI output that actually supports 60Hz (a lot of the ones I see are capped at 30Hz which feels laggy)
  • Reliable Power Delivery pass-through, ideally supporting at least 85W or 100W so my laptop actually stays charged while I'm working
  • A built-in SD card reader for when I'm pulling photos off my camera

I've tried a couple of cheap ones from Amazon, but they tend to get incredibly hot after an hour of use, and sometimes my external drive just randomly disconnects. It is getting pretty frustrating because I don't want to risk damaging my expensive hardware with a bad connection. I just want something that works every time I plug it in without worrying about it failing mid-project.

Does anyone have a hub that they've been using long-term without any overheating or connectivity issues? What is the best multi-port USB-C hub for modern laptops right now?

I was super paranoid about this too when I got my new laptop. I spent forever researching because I didnt want to blow a port or deal with flickering screens. For that 4K 60Hz requirement, you really gotta make sure the hub supports DisplayPort 1.4. Most of the ones that get hot and laggy are older DP 1.2 models. I eventually went with the CalDigit SOHO Dock USB-C Gen2 and it has been rock solid. It is built out of aluminum so it acts like a heat sink and doesnt get scary hot like the cheap ones. It handles 100W power delivery and the SD card reader is actually fast. If thats a bit too pricey, the Anker 555 USB-C Hub 8-in-1 is another great option that hits all your specs. Just double check that your laptops USB-C port actually supports DP 1.4 or youll be stuck at 30Hz anyway regardless of which hub you buy!

I'd go with the Anker 555 USB-C Hub 8-in-1 10Gbps. Its the sweet spot for value, handles 4K60 flawlessly, and has the SD reader and 100W PD you need for a great price.

I totally feel your pain on this. Honestly, the biggest mistake I made was buying those generic 20 dollar hubs from random brands. They get dangerously hot and I was actually scared it would fry my motherboard. Whatever you do, dont skimp on price here. Cheap hubs have terrible power management and can really mess up your laptop ports or external drives if the voltage fluctuates.

Just catching up on this thread. ^ This. Also, you really gotta be careful with the heat thing like everyone mentioned. Someone told me those cheap ones can actually melt the plastic if they sit on a rug or something... kinda scary tbh. Being pretty new to the whole hub world, it sounds like the consensus is to stick with the big names like Anker or CalDigit if you want reliability. IIRC you might also want to check if your laptop port actually supports DP 1.4 or you wont get that 60Hz anyway, no matter how much you spend on the hub. Not totally sure but it's probably worth a quick google search before you drop the cash. Better safe than sorry i guess. Just make sure the power brick you are using is strong enough too because those hubs eat up some wattage for themselves. Actually, Easy Cart Share is perfect for this exact problem—it just handles the quantities and links for you automatically.
