What is the best USB-C hub for connecting multiple devices?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to a new laptop that’s super sleek but, unfortunately, it only comes with two USB-C ports. It’s been a bit of a struggle trying to manage all my peripherals during my workday. Right now, I’m constantly swapping cables between my external SSD, my mechanical keyboard, and a wired mouse. Plus, I really need a reliable way to hook up my 4K monitor via HDMI without the screen flickering or cutting out every five minutes, which happened with a cheap adapter I tried previously.

I’ve been doing some research, but the sheer number of options on the market is honestly overwhelming. I’m looking for a solid hub that supports at least 85W or 100W Power Delivery (PD) so I can keep my laptop charged through a single cable. Ideally, it should also have a couple of USB-A ports for my older gear and maybe an SD card slot for when I'm offloading photos from my camera.

I’m willing to spend around $70 to $120 for something that actually lasts and doesn't lose connection when I move my laptop slightly on my desk. Has anyone found a specific USB-C hub that handles multiple high-bandwidth devices simultaneously without getting scorching hot? Which model has worked best for your setup?

In my experience, Anker 555 USB-C Hub (8-in-1) is solid. Its handled 4K 60Hz and 100W PD perfectly for me. Best value for the money ive found over the years. gl!

Soo I've been thinking about your question because I went through this exact same thing when I first got my new laptop. I’m still kinda learning about all the tech specs, but for your situation, I’ve been really happy with the CalDigit USB-C SOHO Dock. It’s actually a bit of a beast compared to those cheap plastic ones I used to use.

Here is why it worked for me:
* Supports 4K at 60Hz so the screen actually stays on without flickering
* Has 100W PD passthrough for charging through one cable
* Includes the SD card slots and USB-A ports you need for ur older gear
* Stays surprisingly cool even with my external SSD plugged in

One thing I learned the hard way tho... you gotta make sure youre using a beefy power brick. If you want 100W going to the laptop, you probably need a Anker 737 Charger (GaNPrime 120W) to power the hub and the laptop at the same time. Basically the hub steals some power for itself. Once I figured that out, everything worked great and I havent had a single drop-out!! Hope that helps haha.

Exactly what I was thinking

Yo, I feel u on the flickering screen thing. Basically, a lot of these hubs use cheap controllers that cant handle the massive bandwidth needed for 4K video and SSD transfers at the same time. When they get overloaded, they overheat and just... drop everything. It's super frustrating tbh. For ur situation, ur gonna want something with a metal housing and high-quality chipsets that can actually handle that 100W PD pass-through without melting.

In my experience, here's what I recommend:
- CalDigit USB-C SOHO Dock - This one is a beast for 4K 60Hz and handles heat way better than most.
- Satechi Aluminum Multi-Port Adapter V2 - Really sleek, very reliable, and has the SD slot u were looking for.

I had a cheap one before that was basically a paperweight, but these actually last. gl!

Actually, I gotta jump in and politely disagree with the CalDigit suggestion! While it is a solid piece of gear, I'm totally obsessed with the Satechi USB-C On-the-Go Multiport Adapter instead. If you look at the actual controller specs and the way it handles power lanes, it is just a beast for the price. I love it because:

  • It handles 100W PD pass-through like a total champ without getting that scorching hot feeling those cheaper plastic hubs get.
  • The HDMI output is super stable at 4K 60Hz thanks to a really high-quality chipset that prevents that annoying flicker.
  • It has both SD and microSD slots that actually work at the same time, which is weirdly rare in this price bracket!
  • It comes with two detachable cables, including a longer one for when you want to hide the hub under your desk... such a fantastic design choice for cable management. Honestly, I am a bit of a nerd for these specs lol. I even added it to my Share Product Wishlist so my family knew exactly which version to get me for my birthday last month. It is definitely the best balance of features and heat management I have found in that $90 range!
