Looking for a free app to manage kids' Christmas gift lists.

I am freaking out a little bit because Christmas is literally right around the corner and my three kids are already handing me ripped out pages from toy catalogs and I have zero way to track any of it. My house is a mess and my brain is a mess lol. I tried looking online and saw people mentioning Santas Bag which looks okay I guess but it seems like all the good features like adding photos or multiple lists are hidden behind a paywall and honestly with the price of eggs and everything else right now I just cant justify paying for a list app. Then I saw GiftPlanner but the reviews say it crashes on the new iOS and I really dont want to lose all my data on Christmas Eve that would be a nightmare.

My logic was that I could just use a notes app but then I realized I need something where I can mark things as bought or wrapped so I dont accidentally buy the same Pokemon cards twice like I did last year. I also need to be able to share the list with my mother in law in Ohio because she keeps texting me asking for links and then buying stuff thats already been bought by someone else. So I was thinking maybe theres like a shared Google sheet thing? But that feels too much like work and I want something pretty and festive thats actually designed for gifts.

I really need a few specific things:

  • shareable with family members so they dont double buy
  • photo uploads so I get the right version of the toy
  • status tracking for when things are wrapped or hidden in the garage

I need to get this sorted by the weekend because thats when were doing our big shopping trip at Target and I know Im gonna forget half the stuff if it isnt on my phone in a clear way. Im just so stressed about overspending or missing someone. Does anyone know a truly free app that lets you track multiple kids and maybe share the list without it being a total headache?

Hey!! Just saw this while scrolling and honestly feel your pain because keeping track of three kids is a whole marathon by itself lol. You seriously need to check out Giftster! I have been using it for years and it is absolutely amazing for families. It is basically a private social network just for gift registries. You can make a group for your family, and when someone buys something, it marks it as reserved so your MIL wont double buy those Pokemon cards again!! The best part is you can add photos and links so there is zero confusion about which version of a toy you want. Plus, the status tracking is a total lifesaver when you are hiding stuff in the garage. It works on everything, so your MIL can use the web version if she isnt tech-savvy. The layout is way better than a spreadsheet because it actually looks like a festive wish list. Good luck at Target, you got this!!

Just catching up on this thread. If you want to avoid paying for a premium subscription, you might want to consider the technical trade-offs regarding data privacy and sync latency in free software. I would suggest looking at a few specific technical factors before you commit:

  • Real-time synchronization is absolutely critical if multiple family members are accessing the database at once, otherwise the double-buying issue persists.
  • Cloud-based image hosting for those toy photos can be buggy on free tiers, so make sure to test the upload speed first.
  • Be careful with apps that dont have a clear privacy policy, as they often monetize your data in exchange for the free service. To give a more precise recommendation, I have two questions:
  • Are all your family members on iOS, or do you need a cross-platform solution that works for Android and desktop too?
  • What is the approximate number of total items you expect to track across all three lists?
