How early should I start planning my Christmas gift shopping because honestly I am already stressed and its not even that late yet. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I literally have no idea how people handle this without losing their minds or going broke. Last year I waited until like December 15th and it was a total disaster because everything was sold out or the shipping costs were more than the actual gifts which is just ridiculous. I live in a really rural part of Maine and stuff takes forever to get here so I feel like I'm already behind and everything is just gonna be late again.

I have about five family members to buy for and my total budget is only like $500 which isnt much when you think about it especially with how expensive everything is now. Should I be starting in September or something? Is that too early? I see people on TikTok talking about how they are already done in August and that sounds totally insane to me but maybe they are onto something. I dont even know where to start or how to organize it like do I make a list or a spreadsheet or what. I just dont want to be broke and crying in a Walmart on Christmas Eve again. Is there like a normal timeline for this? Like when do the good sales actually happen vs when is it just marketing junk... I'm just so lost with all this.

^ This. Also, I just found this thread and wanted to share how I fixed my own holiday stress. I moved to a much more methodical approach a few years ago after a disastrous year where I spent nearly double my budget on last-minute shipping. Being organized has made me so much more satisfied with the whole process. Here is the system that works well for me now:

  • I start tracking prices in early September to avoid the fake sales that pop up later in the year.
  • I use the Christmas Wishlist Creator to keep my family members needs organized in one place so I dont double buy.
  • I buy one or two items per paycheck to spread the cost out so it doesnt wreck my bank account all at once.
  • I set a strict deadline to have everything ordered by November 10th to account for the slow shipping to my area. Honestly, being completely done before December even starts is such a relief. No more overpaying for express shipping or dealing with out-of-stock notices. It is definitely worth the early effort.

Honestly, starting in September is the sweet spot, especially since you are in rural Maine. I used to be a last-minute shopper too and it was miserable, but now I am way more satisfied with how my holidays turn out. You arent crazy for thinking about this now... waiting until December is just asking for a headache lol. Here is what works well for me:

  • Grab a notebook and list those 5 people today.
  • Set a $100 limit per person to stick to that $500 budget.
  • Use Share Product Wishlist to keep track of links and prices so you dont lose your mind. Seriously, I love using that site because I can put stuff from any store on one list. It makes comparing prices super easy before the big October sales hit. Better to be done by November and just relax while everyone else is panicking!
