So our annual family Secret Santa is coming up in exactly three weeks and honestly Im already stressed out. We have family split between Boston and London, so we do everything online with a strict $50 limit. Last year was a total disaster because my sister ended up getting the exact same makeup organizer from two different people. Both cousins swear they checked her Elfster list but somehow the system let them both buy it. It was so awkward and trying to return stuff internationally is a nightmare with shipping fees.
Im trying to prevent this from happening again this year and Im torn between two ways to handle it.
Option A is to strictly enforce using Elfsters built-in "Mark as Purchased" button. Im leaning toward this because its the most seamless way, but Im really worried that my older relatives, like my 70-year-old uncle, are going to mess it up or forget to click it. Also does it actually hide the item from the wishlist owner? Im paranoid she will see what she is getting and it will ruin the whole Christmas morning vibe.
Option B is to just make a separate shared Google Sheet where everyone logs what they bought. It would definitely prevent duplicates because we can see everything in real time, but it totally ruins the surprise if the recipient accidentally opens the link. Plus its another link for people to manage and my family is not tech-savvy at all.
We have to get this sorted by next weekend so people can start buying and shipping. Is there a specific setting on Elfster to make the built-in system foolproof so duplicates literally cannot happen, or is the Google Sheet my only safe bet?
I ran a 15-person family gift exchange last year and had the exact same anxiety. I actually tested the Elfster system beforehand to see how it handles database updates because I was paranoid about duplicates. We went with Option A and it worked really well. Here's what I learned from our setup:
