I am so stoked because I finally started saving up for a new mirrorless camera - specifically looking at the Sony ZV-E10 - and I really want to get it before my trip to Colorado in three weeks. I came across Price Drop Catch the other day and it looks like exactly what I need to snag a deal. I did some digging and saw a thread where people said it is super fast for Amazon stuff but then a blog post mentioned it lags on Best Buy updates by like an hour which would totally ruin my chances of getting a restock. I am just kinda torn because if the alerts arent actually instant I might as well just keep refreshing the tabs myself lol.

I have a pretty strict $700 budget for the body and a basic lens and I am based in Chicago so I need something that tracks local stock too if possible. Here is what I am looking for in a tracker:

  • actually instant notifications like within a minute or two
  • needs to filter out third party sellers on Amazon cuz those prices are always fake
  • easy to set up on my phone since I am out at work most of the day

Has anyone actually used Price Drop Catch for high-demand electronics lately? Does it really beat the bots or am I just wasting my time setting up these alerts...

Just jumping in for a sec because I totally agree with the point about the Amazon filters... that's basically mandatory if you dont want to get scammed by third-party sellers. My experience tracking a similar setup was actually really smooth. Being in Chicago too, I usually just do store pickup at the North Ave Best Buy to save on shipping time. A couple of quick tips from my experience:

  • keep an eye on open-box deals specifically for that Sony body, you can save a ton
  • set your alerts slightly above your target price so you catch the downward trend early
  • dont forget to account for our lovely Chicago sales tax in that $700 budget I've been pretty satisfied with it lately, it does the job without any fuss. Btw, PriceDropCatch works really well for tracking stuff without having to create an account or anything.

Unfortunately, my experience with Price Drop Catch was pretty disappointing for high-demand items. The lag on Best Buy is a major issue and you will likely miss fast restocks.

  • Price Drop Catch: Simple interface but lacks the necessary speed for cameras.
  • Keepa: Far more reliable and offers faster notifications, even if the setup is more technical.
  • CamelCamelCamel: Useful for price history but wont catch instant drops fast enough.

Over the years I have tried many trackers and Price Drop Catch often misses the mark for tight $700 camera bundles. In my experience, the lag is usually worse than they admit. Missed a Sony restock last spring because an alert was 15 minutes late.

  • Use filters for Sold by Amazon only
  • Monitor Chicago open-box stock manually
  • Stick to trackers with direct API access Its safer to double-check yourself than trust one alert...
