Hey everyone! I just picked up a new iPad and I'm honestly overwhelmed by the sheer amount of screen protector options out there. I really want to keep this screen pristine, but I’m torn between the different types. I’ve seen some people swear by tempered glass for the ultimate drop protection, while others say that matte, paper-like films are the only way to go if you’re using an Apple Pencil for drawing or note-taking.
My main concern is the trade-off. If I go with a thick glass protector, will it affect the touch sensitivity or make the Apple Pencil feel weirdly slippery? On the other hand, I’ve heard that those matte protectors can sometimes make the beautiful Retina display look a bit grainy or 'rainbow-y,' which would be a shame for watching movies. I’m also a bit of a fingerprint magnet, so something that handles smudges well would be a huge plus. I don't mind spending a bit more for quality, but I don't want to waste money on a brand that's just all marketing.
For those of you who have tried a few different brands, what has been your go-to? Do you prefer the smooth feel of glass or the texture of a film, and is there a specific brand that strikes the perfect balance between protection and display clarity?
> If I go with a thick glass protector, will it affect the touch sensitivity or make the Apple Pencil feel weirdly slippery? oh man, i totally get the struggle!! honestly, it basically comes down to what ur doing most. If you're a heavy artist, the <a href=" https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Paperlike+Screen+Protector+for+ iPad+Pro+12.9-inch+%286th%2F5th%2F4th%2F3rd+Gen%29&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Paperlike Screen Protector for iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th/5th/4th/3rd Gen) is the gold standard for feel, but that "rainbow" graininess is real and it kinda kills the Retina vibe for movies. For most people, I'd suggest tempered glass. I use the <a href=" https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Spigen+Tempered+Glass+Screen+Protector+GLAS.tR+Slim+for+ iPad+Pro+11-inch+%28M4%29&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Spigen Tempered Glass Screen Protector GLAS.tR Slim for iPad Pro 11-inch (M4) and touch sensitivity is perfect, tho it is a bit slippery for writing. If u want both, try the <a href=" https://www.amazon.com/s?k=ESR+Magnetic+Removable+Screen+Protector+for+ iPad+Pro+11-inch+%28M4%29&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">ESR Magnetic Removable Screen Protector for iPad Pro 11-inch (M4). It’s a matte film that magnets on for drawing and peels off for Netflix. Seriously a game changer for me... no complaints at all so far! hope that helps gl!
Found this thread today and I'm SO excited for you! Honestly, dont overspend on big marketing brands. I always go budget-friendly: 1. JETech Tempered Glass Screen Protector for iPad 10.2-inch - Literally $10 for a 2-pack. It's thick enough for safety but keeps the Retina display AMAZINGLY clear!
2. ESR Paper-Feel Screen Protector - Usually around $12. It’s a great matte alternative that handles smudges well, tho it might wear down your nibs a bit. Good luck!!
I have been through a ton of iPads over the years and I used to be super nervous about doing the install myself. Tbh I actually used to pay for professional installation at the store because I was terrified of trapping a single piece of dust under the glass. But once I figured out the DIY process, it actually became kinda fun.
Seconding the recommendation above about not overspending! Honestly, dont fall for the massive marketing hype of those $50 brands. I've been through a dozen of these and budget is usually the way to go. NGL, if youre cautious about the screen quality, you really gotta weigh the pros/cons... 1. <a href=" https://www.amazon.com/s?k=amFilm+OneTouch+Tempered+Glass+Screen+Protector+for+ iPad+Pro+11-inch+%28M4%29&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">amFilm OneTouch Tempered Glass Screen Protector for iPad Pro 11-inch (M4): This is my top pick for clarity. It has an auto-alignment kit (huge for avoiding dust) and the oleophobic coating actually handles fingerprints well. It's thin enough that I havent noticed any "slippery" lag with that Apple Pencil mentioned earlier.
2. Tech Armor Anti-Glare/Anti-Fingerprint Film Screen Protector for iPad 10.9-inch: If ur doing notes but hate the "rainbow" effect of some matte films, this is a solid middle ground. It's way cheaper than the Paperlike that was suggested earlier but still gives that tactile resistance. Just a heads up, even the best protector fails if there's one speck of dust... so use the "steamy bathroom" trick to keep the air clear. It basically works every time. Good luck!

Coming back to this thread after an hour of reading reviews elsewhere and it basically just sums up my own internal debate. We have options ranging from cheap glass to high-end matte films and even some solid DIY install advice, but tbh I have this exact same issue and it is exhausting. I have been dealing with this dilemma for months across multiple devices and I still cannot find a definitive answer that works for me. It is honestly so frustrating to be stuck between wanting that crisp display and needing a better writing surface, and even with all this great info, I am still totally paralyzed on which way to go.
