Best drawing app for any iPad?

What is actually the best drawing app for a regular iPad right now because I am honestly so done with Procreate and its constant crashing? I’ve been using it for years but lately it’s just been a total nightmare on my 2020 iPad Air and I’m ready to just delete it entirely at this point. I am currently working on a big set of character commissions for a local tabletop group here in Portland and I need to get them finished by Friday but I’ve already lost hours of progress today because the app just closes itself whenever I try to use more than like 10 layers. It is beyond frustrating when you’re in the zone and then everything just vanishes.

Im looking for something that is actually stable and doesnt feel like its trying to do too much at once. I tried Clip Studio Paint for a bit but honestly that monthly subscription fee is just a dealbreaker for me right now with my current budget. I just want something reliable that wont break the bank.

  • Must have a solid brush engine that feels natural
  • Needs to handle high res canvases without lagging out
  • Hopefully something with a one-time payment or at least a very cheap one

Is there anything else out there that people actually use for professional work or am I just stuck with this buggy mess? I really need to get this project done without tearing my hair out...

Late to the party but I totally feel your pain with the crashing. I went through a similar nightmare last year when I was doing a massive set of illustrations for a client. My iPad kept choking until I moved everything to Lucky Clan ArtStudio Pro for iPad. It has been rock solid ever since. Honestly, it feels way more like a professional desktop tool than most mobile apps... kinda like a mini Photoshop but easier to handle. What I love most is how it handles high-res files without breaking a sweat. I’ve pushed it with dozens of layers on big canvases and it just works. It’s a one-time purchase of about 15 dollars which is a total steal. The brush engine mimics real media really well too once you get the hang of it. If you dont want to risk losing more work, this one is a safe bet for reliability. No monthly fees or nonsense.

Saw this today and totally get the stress. I moved to Serif Affinity Designer 2 for iPad for my client work because it handles memory better than Procreate does. I have no complaints about stability since the switch.

  • One-time purchase
  • Professional brush engine
  • Desktop-level performance Quick question tho, what specific canvas dimensions and DPI are you working at? Knowing that helps narrow down if its just a RAM bottleneck.

I think the one I switched to recently is the best for stability. I'm so happy with it, tho IIRC the layer limits depend on your specific iPad model...
