My rig literally fried yesterday and I need a new build ready for a local LAN tournament in two weeks. Already bought the i9 14900K but choosing a motherboard is driving me insane.
I keep seeing the ASUS ROG Dark Hero recommended everywhere but it costs over 800 CAD here in Toronto which completely blows my budget. People say the MSI Z790 Tomahawk is a good budget alternative but then I read threads saying the VRMs get way too hot with the 14900K power draw. I just want something stable for long gaming sessions that wont thermal throttle. What board actually works without costing a kidney?
Yeah, pricing on those boards is pretty ridiculous right now. Honestly, I had issues with the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi DDR5 keeping up with the 14900K power spikes, it ran way hotter than expected. Here are two better options I've actually tested:
Building on the earlier suggestion, I unfortunately had bios issues with ASUS. Switched to ASRock Z790 Steel Legend WiFi DDR5 and it actually keeps VRMs cool. Just disable unlimited power limits in bios.
> MSI Z790 Tomahawk is a good budget alternative but then I read threads saying the VRMs get way too hot Had similar heat issues. Ended up grabbing the ASRock Z790 Taichi Lite DDR5 because its 24-phase VRM runs super cool. Just set a 253W power limit in BIOS so it doesn't throttle.
