Which board is actually better for a 14900K, the ASUS Z790 Dark Hero or the MSI Z790 ACE MAX? Im super anxious about thermal issues and I need this rig for a video project by Friday. Leaning toward the ASUS but its way more expensive and Im already over my $3500 budget. Is the MSI good enough?
Honestly, spending $600 plus on a motherboard when youre already over budget is a massive mistake. I have built dozens of these high-end rigs and in my experience, the ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Dark Hero ATX is mostly about the aesthetic and features you wont ever use for video editing. The MSI MEG Z790 ACE MAX E-ATX has a massive 24+1+2 phase power design which is complete overkill for a 14900K anyway. If you want to save money for that video project, just grab the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi DDR5. Its VRMs are more than capable of handling the high power draw and youll save hundreds. Use that cash on a better cooler like the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 360 AIO because thats what actually prevents throttling during renders, not a fancy board. Dont overcomplicate it.
TL;DR: Try MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI Motherboard. Im satisfied with its performance; the VRM stays cool during long exports and it really helped me stay under budget.
