Ive built PCs for ages but this AM5 platform is kinda new to me. Planning to pair a 7800X3D with my 4080 Super for 1440p gaming. I dont wanna break the bank, ideally under 300 bucks. Any solid B650 boards that wont give me major VRM headaches? What are you guys using right now?

Honestly, building on AM5 has been a bit of a trip. I spent weeks stressing over VRMs after a buddy of mine had a board throttle his chip during long sessions. Since you're pairing that with a 4080 Super, don't cheap out on the power delivery or you're gonna have a bad time when the system is under full load. Here is what I've learned the hard way:

  • Watch out for board bios updates, some of the early ones were super unstable with memory training.
  • Make sure the heatsinks on the VRMs actually have some mass to them, cause that chip can pull a surprising amount of power.
  • Avoid boards that dont have internal headers for your case layout, it makes cable management a nightmare. Just be careful with the cheaper options out there, they aren't all built the same.
