What motherboard should I buy for a super small gaming PC im trying to build? Sorry if this is a really basic question but I honestly have no idea what I am doing and all these numbers in the names are so confusing lol. I bought this case called the Lian Li A4-H2O because it looked cool but now I realize I need a specific tiny board.

I want to use an Intel i5 chip and I have like $220 max to spend on the board part. Is there a specific one that fits or are they all the same size?? Im trying to get this done by next weekend for a lan party so I need to order something fast...

Like someone mentioned, you need ITX. In my experience, ASRock B760I Lightning WiFi DDR5 is the absolute best value.

  • 14+1+1 Power Phase
  • Solid VRM cooling Itll fit that case perfectly.

Caught this a bit late but man, building in the A4-H2O is such a rush! I absolutely love that case choice, it is easily one of the sleekest SFF setups out there. Since you are trying to stay under $220, you should definitely look at the MSI MPG B760I Edge WiFi DDR5. I have used this in a couple builds and the thermal performance on the heatsinks is just amazing for the price. It usually lands right around $200, which is perfect for your budget! Another awesome option is the ASRock Z790M-ITX WiFi DDR5. It is a bit of a sleeper pick because it gives you those Z790 features while staying super affordable. The power delivery isn't quite as beefy as the MSI board, but honestly, if you are just running a standard i5 and not doing heavy overclocking, it won't even matter. It is a total beast for the money and handles the restricted airflow of tiny cases really well. One huge tip... check out the SFF.Network forums or use PCPartPicker to double-check your CPU cooler clearance. That case has a strict 55mm limit and it's easy to buy the wrong part when you're in a rush! Also, since you're heading to a LAN party, definitely grab some small zip ties. Cable management in that tiny box is basically a puzzle game on hard mode lol. You're gonna love the final result though, there's nothing cooler than a tiny PC that absolutely shreds!

That case is a really solid choice but yeah, its super tight in there. I was pretty stressed during my first small form factor build because I didnt want to break anything or have it overheat. You definitely need a Mini-ITX board. Nothing else will fit in there. Since you are using an i5 and want to stay under 220, you should have plenty of decent options from the major manufacturers. I usually recommend staying with the big names for peace of mind:

  • Go with ASUS if you want a board that is usually very reliable and has a bios that is easy to navigate.
  • MSI is another great pick because their power delivery is usually really stable for gaming.
  • ASRock is worth a look too if you want to save some money without sacrificing the basic features. Honestly, just get any B760 chipset board from those brands and you will be fine. I personally stick to the ASUS gaming series when I can afford it because the build quality feels safer, but their mid-range stuff is usually just as good for a standard i5 setup. Just make sure the board has the LGA 1700 socket so your chip actually fits. It is way better to spend an extra twenty bucks on a brand you recognize than to get a headache later when a cheap board fails and you have to take the whole Lian Li A4-H2O apart again... that case is a total maze to work in once everything is packed in there.
