Im super stressed because im ordering parts for a Fractal Terra build this weekend and I cant decide on the board. I need something that wont overheat in such a tiny case. I was looking at the ASUS ROG Strix B760-I because I like the bios but its like $220 and then theres the Gigabyte B760I Aorus Pro which is cheaper but Ive heard their software is kinda trash. My budget is strictly under $250 for this part.

  • no wifi issues please
  • must have 2 m.2 slots
  • fits a noctua l9i

Does the Asus justify the extra cash or am I just overthinking this whole thing? I really dont want to deal with returns if it doesnt fit...

Regarding what #1 said about choosing the more expensive one for VRM heatsinks, I definitely agree that managing thermals in a case as small as the Terra is priority number one. If you go with a lower-tier board, those VRMs might struggle and cause throttling when things get hot. You really gotta be careful with parts in such a cramped space.

  • The ASUS ROG STRIX B760-I GAMING WIFI is pretty much the gold standard for this build. The BIOS is intuitive and it fits the Noctua NH-L9i-17xx perfectly, but you should still be careful about RAM height since the heatsinks are quite bulky. It is pricey, but you wont be fighting the software later on.
  • I would suggest looking into the MSI MPG B760I EDGE WIFI as a solid alternative. It usually sits right around your budget and has the two M.2 slots you need. I have found their WiFi stability to be more consistent than the cheaper Gigabyte options lately.
  • Be careful with the Gigabyte B760I Aorus Pro. While the hardware looks good on paper, their software suite can be really buggy, and some users have reported the WiFi dropping out during gaming sessions because of the specific chips they use. Honestly, if you can stretch for the Asus, it is probably worth it to avoid the potential headaches. Just make sure to double check the VRM shroud clearance one last time tho...

Building on the earlier suggestion, i would suggest being really careful with the VRM heights. I once bought a cheaper board for a tiny build and the bulky heatsink actually blocked my cooler. Make sure to check if the ASUS ROG Strix B760-I Gaming WiFi fits the Noctua NH-L9i-17xx Low-Profile CPU Cooler on Noctuas compatibility list first. Personally, i would pay the premium just to avoid that buggy Gigabyte BIOS.

I chose the more expensive one for my current setup to get better vrm heatsinks. I am totally satisfied; the thermals stay within spec and it works well under load.
