Finally got a PS5 after saving up for ages but my current monitor is an ancient 1080p screen and it looks pretty bad. I spent hours looking at the Gigabyte M28U and some LG models but I am confused about HDMI 2.1.
I read that you need it for 120Hz but others say 1440p is better value now that Sony updated the software. My budget is capped at £450 and I am in a small room so I cant fit a big TV. Is the jump to 4k actually noticeable on a 27 inch screen or should I just stick with a high-end 1440p monitor...
TLDR: Go 4K. I'm gonna disagree on 1440p because the Gigabyte M28U 28-inch 4K 144Hz is a decent option often on sale. Sharpness is way better even at 28 inches, tbh.
Saw this a bit late but honestly 1440p is such a sweet spot for the PS5 right now, kinda saves you a ton of cash. Before I suggest something like the Gigabyte M27Q 27-inch 1440p 170Hz, what kind of games do you actually play? Are we talking fast shooters or cinematic stuff? Because HDMI 2.1 isnt always strictly needed for 1440p 120Hz on Sony hardware, which really helps stay under budget.
> Is the jump to 4k actually noticeable on a 27 inch screen or should I just stick with a high-end 1440p monitor... Like someone mentioned, 1440p is usually the sweet spot for that budget, but you gotta be careful. In my experience, the biggest mistake people make is buying for the resolution and ignoring the port specs. Watch out for HDMI 2.1 labels that are actually just rebranded 2.0 ports. Sonys implementation of VRR is picky, and if the monitor doesnt have the full bandwidth or at least enough for the PS5 to trigger it properly, you wont get the smooth experience you paid for. Also, honestly, dont bother with any of these mid-range monitors if youre buying them for HDR. HDR400 is basically a marketing scam and usually looks worse than SDR on a budget screen because it lacks the brightness to actually do anything meaningful. Quick question tho, do you usually play with the lights off or is it a bright room? That makes a massive difference for whether you should look at IPS or VA panels because the contrast ratios vary a ton and cheap IPS glow can be a real vibe killer in the dark.
