So Ive been building PCs and lugging around these 10-pound 'portable' workstations for like ten years now so I thought I knew what I was doing but man the thin and light market is a total mess right now. I just sold my old Alienware because Im commuting into the city (Seattle) three days a week and my back is literally killing me from carrying that brick. I bought a Zephyrus G14 thinking it was the holy grail but the thermals were absolutely insane even after I messed with the fan curves and undervolted it a bit... it was hitting 95C just playing basic stuff. Then I tried a Razer Blade 14 and the battery bloat concerns are giving me anxiety before I even get past the return window.

I have about $2200 to spend and I need something that doesnt scream 'gamer' in a meeting but can actually handle Cyberpunk or some heavy Premiere Pro renders. My main issues with what Ive seen so far are:

  • thermal throttling under load
  • fan noise during light office work
  • cheap build quality on the hinges

Is there actually a thin and light that isnt a thermal nightmare or am I chasing a ghost? Like what is actually the best thin and light laptop for gaming that wont die in a year?

I was in the exact same boat trying to find a stealthy machine for my commute that could still handle editing and gaming. I ended up buying the Lenovo Legion Slim 7i Gen 8 Intel i9-13900H RTX 4070 and I have absolutely no complaints so far. It works well under heavy Premiere renders and the thermals are actually manageable compared to the G14. In office mode, the fans are practically silent, which is a huge relief. The build quality feels rock solid, especially the hinges which are way better than the cheap plastic stuff on other brands. I am really happy with the performance-to-thermals ratio on this setup. Let me know if you want me to share my fan curves or run some benchmarks, glad to assist.

Are you open to a 16-inch screen, or is 14-inch your hard limit? If 16 works, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 Intel Ultra 7 RTX 4070 offers significantly better thermals and chassis rigidity than the G14.
