sorry if this is a really dumb question but I have no idea where to start and my old laptop just died while I was trying to edit some 4K footage for a wedding I filmed. I'm honestly so stressed because I need a replacement by Friday and I dont understand all the tech talk about processors and stuff. I just need something that wont lag or crash when I try to render big files. I live in Chicago and have about $1500 to spend at most.

  • can handle 4K without freezing
  • fits in a $1500 budget
  • beginner friendly
  • available now

Is there a specific model that just works for people who arent tech genius? I'm so confused by all the options...

Re: "Used the Apple MacBook Air M3 16GB RAM..."

  • Agree that stability is key, but be careful because thermal throttling might hit you on an Air during long renders. Since youre in Chicago, maybe look at the Lenovo Legion Pro 5i Gen 8 Intel i7-13700HX RTX 4060 16GB RAM.
  • Better cooling for heavy 4K export.
  • Dedicated VRAM is basically essential for wedding footage.
  • Usually fits right in your budget.

Used the Apple MacBook Air M3 16GB RAM 512GB SSD for my last gig and loved it!

  • Mac: stable/cool.
  • ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 Ryzen 9 4060: faster/hot. Check Puget Systems stats!

I can definitely help you find something reliable, but we need to be very careful because 4K rendering is a beast that eats lower-end laptops. Since you have a wedding deadline by Friday, you really dont want to gamble on a machine that might overheat or crash during the final export. I have seen way too many people buy a laptop only to have it thermal throttle and lag once the timeline gets complicated. To help narrow this down for what is available locally in Chicago right now, I have a couple of questions:

  • Which specific editing software is being used for this wedding footage?
  • Is a color-accurate built-in display a priority, or is an external monitor available? Giving you a random model name without knowing your software could lead to more frustration. You need something that just works right out of the box without any technical headaches.
