My current laptop literally started smoking yesterday while I was trying to render a simple project and now I am panicking because I have a massive 4K wedding video due in two weeks. I am stuck between getting the new MacBook Pro M3 Max with 64GB of RAM or the ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo because that second screen looks so useful for my timeline.

I have about $3800 saved up and I am really worried about making the wrong call since this is basically my life savings. Is the Mac really that much better for 4K color grading or should I go with the Asus and save some cash for lenses? I need to order something by tomorrow night...

> Is the Mac really that much better Unfortunately, my Max overheated tbh. Save $1200 with Apple MacBook Pro M3 Pro 12-core 36GB RAM. It handled my last 4K project flawlessly without thermal throttling.

Honestly, I had some issues with the Zenbook screen... it just isnt as useful as it looks for heavy 4K timelines and the battery life was pretty disappointing. Since youre worried about your savings, dont spend the full $3800. I would grab the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 2024 32GB RAM RTX 4080 instead:

  • runs much cooler than the Mac
  • oled is solid for color work
  • saves a grand for lenses

Honestly its absolutely ridiculous how much we have to shell out these days just for hardware that doesnt catch fire. I saw your post earlier and it really triggered me because I went through something similar last year. Dealing with these massive tech companies feels like a total scam sometimes... you pay nearly four grand and still have to worry if the thing is gonna melt right before a deadline. It drives me crazy that pro gear has basically become spend your entire life savings or else. I ended up with a setup I am pretty satisfied with now and it works well for my 4K projects, but finding it without getting totally ripped off was a nightmare. The way they price gouge for simple upgrades is pure greed. Quality control feels like its going downhill while prices just keep climbing. Just keep your head up tho, weddings are stressful enough without your gear literally smoking.
