Hey everyone! I am planning to upgrade my workstation for heavy 4K video editing and I am a bit stuck on picking the right GPU. I mainly use Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve, so I need something that handles smooth timeline scrubbing and complex color grading without any stuttering.

With the current 2024 market, I am debating between the RTX 4080 Super or maybe jumping to a 4090 if the performance boost for 10-bit footage is actually worth the extra cost. I have also been hearing mixed things about VRAM requirements—is 16GB sufficient for long timelines, or should I aim higher to be safe?

What do you think is the best value-to-performance card for professional video work right now?

Honestly, if you're looking at the best bang for your buck in a pro setting, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super 16GB GDDR6X is probably the sweet spot for 4K. 16GB VRAM is usually plenty for most Premiere timelines. But... since you mentioned DaVinci Resolve, that changes things. Resolve is a total VRAM hog once you start adding heavy noise reduction or Fusion effects. Ive seen projects crash on 16GB cards when things get complex, so jumping to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 24GB GDDR6X isnt just about raw speed, its about that 24GB buffer. If you do this for a living, the 4090 saves so much frustration with out of memory errors. If you're mostly doing standard 4K cuts with basic grading, save the cash and go 4080 Super. If you do heavy color work, the 4090 is the king. Lemme know if you want more info on PSU requirements too, cuz the 4090 needs a lot of juice.

Quick question - what specific codecs are you mostly working with? Honestly, knowing if its H.264 or RAW makes a HUGE difference for VRAM needs before you spend all that cash.

Did this last week, worked perfectly

Like someone mentioned, Resolve is a totally different beast than Premiere when it comes to memory usage. I started out trying to save some cash with a smaller card but I kept getting those annoying GPU memory full errors during long exports. Honestly, the peace of mind you get from the extra headroom is worth the price tag if you do this for a living. Here is what I found works best for a stable setup:

  • Get the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 24GB GDDR6X if you plan on using noise reduction or heavy Fusion clips
  • The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Super 16GB GDDR6X is a beast for standard 4K timelines in Premiere
  • Stick with Studio Drivers instead of Game Ready ones for way fewer crashes I ended up biting the bullet on the 4090 because I hated my PC freezing mid-render. It's overkill for simple cuts but man, it just works without me having to worry about it. Ngl, my electricity bill went up a bit tho... lol.
