What is the best GPU for 4K video editing?

So I finally decided to stop using my old phone to edit vlogs and actually bought a real camera, but now my laptop is basically catching fire every time I try to open a video file. I have no idea what I am doing here, honestly. I keep hearing about GPUs and how they help with rendering or something? Im totally lost. Im based in Chicago and I want to start getting these videos up on YouTube by the end of the summer, but right now I cant even scrub through a clip without the whole thing freezing for like ten minutes. My budget is probably around 500 to 700 bucks for a new card, but I dont even know if that is realistic or if I am way off base here.

I looked at some websites and they are talking about VRAM and clock speeds and honestly it just looks like gibberish to me. Do I really need to spend a fortune to edit 4K footage? I am just a beginner, I dont need Hollywood effects, just basic cuts and maybe some color correction. My current setup is a mess and I just want something that actually works so I dont have to wait an hour just to export a five minute clip.

  • Should I be looking at Nvidia or AMD?
  • Is it even worth upgrading my current PC or should I just save up for a whole new rig?
  • Is there a specific model that is the gold standard right now for people who have no clue what they are doing?

Sorry if this is a super dumb question, I feel like everyone else on here already knows exactly what they are doing while I am just stumbling around in the dark trying to figure out why my computer is making that weird grinding noise when I drag the timeline...

Honestly, that grinding sound is probably your poor laptop fan struggling to dissipate heat because the integrated graphics are drowning. Editing 4K footage without a dedicated encoder is a nightmare. Unfortunately, most laptops cant be upgraded with a new GPU, so you are likely looking at a full desktop build if you want smooth playback. For your budget, stick to Nvidia because their CUDA cores are just better optimized for most video editing software like Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve. AMD is fine for gaming, but I have had issues with their stability in professional creative suites.

  • The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 12GB GDDR6X is your best bet for 4K workflows.
  • 12GB of VRAM is the absolute minimum I would recommend for 4K color grading.
  • If you really cannot stretch the budget, look for a used Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 10GB GDDR6X, though 10GB might feel limiting eventually. Don't bother trying to cram a card into a laptop, you'll just waste money. Build a proper rig with enough cooling, because 4K footage pushes hardware really hard. The RTX 4070 gives you access to the latest NVENC encoder which makes exporting clips way faster than what you are dealing with now. If you keep using that laptop, you are gonna fry the motherboard... save yourself the headache and build something that can actually handle the bitrate.
