Recent leaks suggest more details about the Nintendo Switch 2, with a Reddit user "NextHandheld" claiming to have seen a retail version of the console. While the original thread was removed, moderators reportedly verified the leak's authenticity, with proof expected to be shared on Christmas.

According to the leaker, the Switch 2 will feature:

  • Launch: Mid-March 2025
  • Official announcement: January 2025
  • 8-inch LCD screen
  • Price range: $399-499
  • Available in White, Gray, and a game-themed edition
  • Improved Joy-Cons with magnetic attachment and Hall Effect sensors
  • Dual USB-C ports
  • Updated dock with possible fan and 4K30 support

The game-themed version is reportedly tied to Mario Kart 9, though the leaker was not able to power on the device or share details about its software or user interface.

The leaker claims to be delaying the release of proof photos until Christmas to protect their source, as the unit in question is a special edition that could be easily traced. Several mockups based on these descriptions have since appeared online.

Been looking at these specs for a few hours and honestly, it looks like a solid upgrade path. Im pretty satisfied with the move to Hall Effect sensors... its about time. Just a few technical warnings for everyone getting hyped tho:

  • Magnetic Joy-Cons sound sleek but be careful with the physical stress during handheld play. If those magnets arent high-grade, you might experience disconnects or instability when putting torque on the rails during intense games.
  • 4K30 in the dock is a bit concerning from a bandwidth perspective. If the controller chip only handles 30Hz at that resolution, the input latency will be pretty rough. It works well for media, but maybe not for fast-paced titles.
  • Watch out with the dual USB-C ports. Nintendo usually uses a proprietary Power Delivery profile, so dont just plug any random high-wattage brick into it until we see the voltage specs. Bricking is a real risk with their custom PD chips. The 8-inch screen size works well for that footprint and I have no complaints if they keep the price under 500 bucks. Glad they are finally addressing the drift issues at the hardware level.
