So I'm finally trying to put together my first gaming rig for 1080p gaming in my tiny dorm room and money is super tight right now. I have about 150 bucks set aside for the processor since I need to get this build running by next weekend. Im torn between the i3-12100F or maybe stretching my budget for the i5-12400F. Is it actually worth the extra cash for the i5 or should I just save that money for better ram? Im honestly stressing out that I'm gonna pick the wrong one and regret it as soon as I start playing anything, any advice guys?

Look, if you can swing it, definitely grab the Intel Core i5-12400F 6-Core 2.5 GHz. It is miles better for longevity than the Intel Core i3-12100F 4-Core 3.3 GHz.

  • The extra cores handle modern games way better
  • You wont need to upgrade as soon Honestly, try saving on the case or storage instead. You dont want to regret missing out on that extra performance in six months.

Just saw this. Honestly, look at used parts or grab an Intel Core i3-13100F 4-Core 3.4 GHz.

  • Gives better clock speeds
  • Saves cash for a decent SSD Pretty solid for budget builds.

Oh man, I am literally in the exact same spot right now. Been scouring forums for like three weeks trying to decide between those two for my own tiny desk setup and I am just as lost as you are. It is honestly so frustrating not knowing if the extra cash is actually gonna pay off or if it just disappears into the void. Hope we both figure this out soon.

> Look, if you can swing it, definitely grab the Intel Core i5-12400F 6-Core 2.5 GHz. ^ This. Also, honestly, I wouldnt rush the decision. I tried building on a super tight budget last year and had issues with cheaping out on cooling, which led to thermal throttling. It was a nightmare. While the Intel Core i5-12400F 2.5 GHz 6-Core is definitely the smarter long-term play, unfortunately, those extra cores generate more heat than the Intel Core i3-12100F 3.3 GHz 4-Core. If your dorm room is small and gets hot, you might need a decent cooler too, like the DeepCool AK400 Performance CPU Cooler. I honestly regret not getting a solid platform to start with because upgrading later is such a pain. If you go with the i3, you're basically gonna hit a wall in CPU-heavy titles pretty quick. I had a similar setup and the stuttering in modern games was not as good as expected. If you can squeeze the budget, prioritize that i5. It saves you the headache of replacing the whole mobo/cpu combo a year from now. Just make sure you get some reliable memory like Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4-3200MHz and don't skimp on the power supply. You got this, just take your time building it and check your cable management so you have good airflow.
