What Intel CPU do I need to actually edit 4K video without my computer freezing every five seconds? Honestly I am so frustrated right now because I keep trying to look this up and there are just way too many numbers and letters and it makes zero sense to me. I'm sorry if this is a really basic question but I am totally lost. I started doing some videography for local weddings here in Seattle and I just upgraded to a camera that shoots in 4K but my current computer is basically a brick when I try to use it.
Every time I try to scrub through the timeline in Premiere it just lags for like ten seconds and then the whole thing crashes and I lose my work. It is driving me insane. I have about $2,000 saved up to build a new desktop or buy one or whatever I need to do but I dont even know where to start with the processor. Someone told me to get an i9 but then I saw a video saying an i7 is fine and then someone else mentioned something about quicksync? I dont even know what that is. Is it a program? A part of the chip? I just want something that works.
I have a huge wedding project due in about three weeks and at this rate I am going to have to tell the couple I cant finish it because my computer is garbage. Should I go for the newest 14th gen stuff or does it not really matter? I heard some of them get really hot too which sounds scary because I dont want my house to catch on fire or something lol. I just need a solid recommendation that fits in my budget and wont make me want to throw my monitor out the window every time I try to edit a simple clip. Do I need more cores or faster speed? I dont even know the difference really. Does the i9-14900k thing actually work better for video or am I just wasting money at that point? Please help me out before I lose my mind...
Ugh I totally feel your pain! 4K wedding footage is a total beast to deal with. Honestly, you should skip the i9 because it runs way too hot and has been having some stability issues lately. I am obsessed with the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-Core 5.6GHz for video work! It is absolutely fantastic for Premiere. That QuickSync thing you heard about is just a special part of the processor that handles video files like magic. Just make sure you dont get the 'F' model or you lose that feature! For your $2000 budget, this chip is the absolute winner. Since you are worried about heat, which is a totally valid concern, just pair it with a Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360mm AIO cooler. It keeps everything super safe and stable so you wont crash mid-edit. You are gonna love how much faster it feels!
> Should I go for the newest 14th gen stuff or does it not really matter? I heard some of them get really hot too... Stumbled upon this discussion and honestly, you are right to be cautious about heat issues. I went through a nightmare last year with my own rig where I chased the highest specs thinking it would solve my 4K lag. Tbh, it was a disaster. The chip I got was so powerful it would thermal throttle and shut down mid-export. I actually lost a whole day of work because the system became unstable under the heavy load of a big project. Before you drop that $2,000, are you planning on putting this together yourself or looking for something ready to go? It makes a huge difference for the cooling setup. Also, what kind of storage are you currently using for your footage? Scrubbing issues can sometimes be related to slow drives too... dont forget to check that.
