Ive been building gaming rigs for years but I just got asked to spec out five office pcs for my sisters firm in Chicago and honestly im kinda hyped to try a budget build for once. My logic was just to grab the i3-12100 because those 4 cores are usually plenty for heavy spreadsheets and web apps but then I started looking at the 14100 prices and now im second guessing myself.
The budget is only $450 per tower so every dollar counts but I want these to actually last her five years without slowing down. Is it even worth jumping to the newer gen for basic office work or should I just stick with the 12th gen and spend the extra on more ram? I need to order these by Monday so let me know what you guys think...
I am so stoked you are doing this! I actually did something super similar for a local dentists office last year and went through the exact same dilemma. I ended up picking the Intel Core i3-12100 3.3 GHz Quad-Core and let me tell you it was the absolute best decision ever! For basic office tasks like big spreadsheets and dozens of Chrome tabs the difference between that and the Intel Core i3-14100 3.5 GHz Quad-Core is basically zero in day to day feel. Honestly its way better to use that extra cash to jump to 16GB of Crucial RAM 16GB Kit 2x8GB DDR4 3200MHz instead. Those extra browser tabs eat memory way faster than they stress the CPU anyway. My friend says her machines are still lightning fast a year later and she totally loves them! Stick with the 12th gen, its a total budget beast!
