Best budget Intel CPU for a mid-range build?

Question

Whats the absolute best budget intel cpu right now for a mid range gaming rig? I was looking at the i5 12400f cuz its super cheap, but then read some stuff about the 13400 being better for futureproofing even though it runs a bit hotter. Im trying to order parts by friday since my current pc just died completely on me and I need something working for college work and some light gaming in my dorm room. Which one should I actually buy?

If you want a really safe bet that stretches every dollar, look for a deal on the Intel Core i3-12100F 4-Core 3.3 GHz. It drops the price even lower than the i5 and handles homework and basic games no problem. Just make sure your power supply isn't total garbage before plugging everything in, especially if you're reusing old parts. Reliability matters way more than futureproofing when you need it for college.

man that timing sucks with your pc dying right before classes. honestly just grab the Intel Core i5-12400F and dont stress about the 13th gen stuff. I built a rig for my roommate using that exact chip last semester and it handles mid range gaming plus heavy CAD work without breaking a sweat.

price to performance is just insane right now

runs cool even with the stock cooler so you save money there

drop it in a cheap B660 board and you are good to go futureproofing is mostly a trap imo. by the time you actually need a better cpu, the socket will be dead anyway and youll need a new board too. save your cash for better ram or a stronger gpu since thats what actually matters for gaming in a dorm. trust me you wont regret saving the extra bucks on the 12400f.
