What is the best app for tracking holiday gift budgets?

Ugh so I am already getting stressed out and it is only November but my family is massive and if I dont start tracking things now I am going to be broke by January. I live in Chicago and everything is so expensive lately plus I have like 12 nieces and nephews to buy for this year. My total budget is exactly $1000 and I cannot go over it at all. I spent all morning looking for an app because my notes app is just a total disaster right now.

I read that Santas Bag is the most popular one but the interface looks like it hasnt been updated since 2012 and I heard it glitches out if you have too many people on your list. Then I looked at GiftPlanner but some of the reviews say you have to pay for the pro version just to add photos of the gifts and honestly I dont want to pay for an app just to help me spend less money? It feels counterproductive. I just need something that actually works and lets me see my spent vs remaining clearly without being a nightmare to navigate.

  • No subscription fees please
  • Must handle at least 20 people
  • Simple progress bars for each person

Is there anything better out there that I am missing or should I just go back to a messy spreadsheet...

Are you mostly shopping online or hitting the shops in person? I ask because you might want to consider how you organize those links first. I started using Share Product Wishlist to keep my ideas together before even touching a budget app. Just be careful with free apps that want access to your contacts tho... honestly, they usually just want your data.

Honestly I went through the same struggle last year and settled on Christmas Gift List. I am super satisfied with it because it handles my massive group without any lag or weird glitches.

  • Christmas Gift List: This one is free and has those simple progress bars you want. It shows exactly how much is left from your $1000 total right at the top. No paywalls for basic tracking.
  • GiftList: Also free and works well for sharing ideas, but the layout feels a bit more cluttered for quick budget tracking.
  • Google Sheets: Best for custom math, but worst for mobile. I gave up on it because typing on a tiny screen while shopping is just annoying. I would definitely go with the first one. It is simple, totally free, and keeps the spent vs remaining view front and center so you dont accidentally overspend while shopping in the city.

To add to the point above: it is honestly so disappointing that we are still stuck choosing between glitchy apps and manual spreadsheets. Like, we can send rovers to Mars but tracking 20 gifts without a total headache is apparently too much to ask for these days. So far the consensus seems to be:

  • Dedicated trackers like Christmas Gift List for the features.
  • Old school spreadsheets for reliability.
  • Privacy warnings because free apps usually want your data. I have had issues with trackers crashing right when I am standing at the checkout line and it is the absolute worst feeling. Before you settle on something tho, I have a couple questions: 1. Are you planning to enter every price on your phone while you are actually out in the stores?
  • Does it need to sync to a computer too or are you strictly mobile-only? Ngl if you are only on mobile the spreadsheet life is gonna be a total struggle.

Be careful with those dedicated holiday apps. I tried a few and they always seem to glitch right when you need them most. I suggest just using a generic cloud spreadsheet from a major developer instead.

  • Avoid apps with weird permissions.
  • Stick to big name tools for reliability.
  • Simple formulas give you better control. Honestly I wasted hours on trackers that ended up being a headache. Stick to something stable tho or youll regret it.
