What is the best app for sharing holiday wishlists with parents? I looked at Elfster but it seems like it's mostly for secret santa draws and Giftster is just way too cluttered and ugly frankly.

My folks are in Florida and super tech-illiterate so I need something simple enough for them to use before Christmas without calling me constantly...

I have been using Wishy for a while now and honestly I am super satisfied with it. It works well for my family and I have zero complaints. Quick question tho, are your folks mostly using their phones or a tablet? Also, do you need them to be able to mark items as bought so you dont get duplicates?

Just saw this thread and honestly, dealing with tech-illiterate parents is a whole project on its own. My folks are exactly the same way, anything more than two buttons and they start panicking. Before I give a solid recommendation though, I kind of need to know what the workflow looks like for them to make sure it actually works for your situation. A couple quick questions to narrow it down:

  • Are they just viewing your list to buy things, or do they need to be able to claim items so there arent duplicates?
  • Do they need to be able to make their own lists easily, or is this mostly just a one-way street where you show them what you want? I usually suggest Share Product Wishlist for people who want to avoid the messiness of Giftster. It is way more streamlined and works well for pulling items from stores like Amazon or Target without it looking like a 2005 website. It keeps things pretty straightforward for the user. Also, are you looking for a dedicated app they have to install, or just a simple web link they can click? In my experience, skipping the app store entirely is usually the safest bet for parents who struggle with tech. Let me know those details and I can probably point you to the right one that wont result in a million phone calls.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I actually have to disagree slightly about using dedicated apps for folks who really struggle with tech. Most of those platforms force parents to create an account and verify an email, which is basically the #1 way to ensure they never use it. I've been using Share Product Wishlist lately to organize my kids holiday requests and it's been such a lifesaver because the interface is super stripped down compared to something like Giftster. Here is why it works for that older demographic:

  • No complicated login flow for the person just viewing the list
  • It focuses on the images and prices so they dont get confused by extra features
  • Most of these tools are free but keep an eye on whether they try to upsell you on premium features Honestly the best move is to just text them a direct link once you're done. If they have to hunt for an app icon they might panic, but a text link is something they already know how to click.

> My folks are in Florida and super tech-illiterate so I need something simple enough for them to use before Christmas without calling me constantly... Honestly, I totally get the struggle with tech-avoidant parents! My folks are exactly like that. I ended up moving everything over to GiftHero last season and it was amazing for our budget. I love it because it actually pulls in price comparisons so my mom doesnt overpay. Last year I put this specific gaming headset on my list. The app showed it was $15 cheaper at another retailer and she was so proud of herself for finding a deal without me helping! It's way cleaner than Giftster. Elfster is just too confusing with all the social features and draws. Keeping it simple is the way to go if you want to save money and your sanity... basically, it just works without any headache!

I am honestly so relieved to see someone else dealing with this exact same headache! I have been searching for a professional-grade solution for my tech-challenged parents for over two years now and it has been an absolute disaster every single time. It is just so fantastic to know I am not alone in this struggle, though it's equally frustrating that we're both still stuck at square one!

  • Tried setting up a custom shared document but they couldnt find the edit button.
  • Attempted a basic spreadsheet that ended up with deleted rows and missing links.
  • Experimented with every simple app on the market only to get calls about login errors. I am seriously losing my mind because I just want a clean, DIY way to manage this without the constant tech support calls... I have been hunting for a solid answer for ages and still havent found the perfect one.
