just ordered a new 14 inch macbook for my freelance writing gig after my old dell finally gave out on me mid assignment last week and honestly im kind of stressed about setting everything up right this time. my budget is around 150 bucks for extras since i already splurged a bit on the computer itself. ive been falling down endless rabbit holes online trying to figure out what gear I actually need. like I read on wirecutter that a good multiport usb c hub is non negotiable because of all the missing ports these days, and reddit threads are super obsessed with vertical laptop stands if you plug into an external monitor. but then other people say stands are a total waste of money and you just need a sleeve and a decent mouse. im mostly gonna be working from my cramped apartment desk in chicago 80 percent of the time and traveling to coffee shops maybe once or twice a week. do I actually need a mechanical keyboard or is that overkill for just typing docs and emails all day? and what about mouse pads vs using it bare on wood. I just want to buy the stuff that actually makes daily workflow smoother without cluttering my desk with junk I'll never touch. what are the absolute must-have accessories for any laptop that I wont regret buying a month from now?

Congrats on the new macbook. Skip the mechanical keyboard for now since apples built in keyboard is actually great for writing. With your budget grab an Anker PowerExpand 8 In 1 USB C Hub for around 45 bucks to fix the port issue and definitely pick up a Logitech MX Master 3S Wireless Mouse because your wrist will thank you during long writing sessions. Dont bother with vertical stands if you are just typing in coffee shops half the time.
