I am trying to get a head start on our big family get-together in 2026 and I am already hitting a wall with how to manage all the stuff people want to bring or give. We are doing this big campout thing in Colorado and since it is so far away for some people we need to be really organized with who is bringing what and what the kids actually want for their birthdays since we are celebrating all of them at once. I tried using a normal Word document but then I have to keep emailing it back and forth and it gets so messy with different versions and I just cant keep up with it.

I think I need one of those online wishlist things but I have no idea which ones are good or if they are even safe to use. I am really sorry if this is a dumb question but I am just not very good with this kind of stuff. I just want something where I can send a link to my sisters and my mom and they can just click it and see everything.

I have a few things that I really need it to do:

  • It must be completely free because we are saving every penny for the campsite
  • It needs to be something that stays active for a long time since we are planning so far out
  • It should let people mark an item as bought so we dont end up with ten of the same thing
  • It really needs to be simple because my older relatives get frustrated with technology
  • If people can add their own items to the list too that would be amazing

Is there a specific site that people use for this that isnt just for weddings? I feel like I am drowning in all these options I see on Google and half of them look like they are trying to sell me something I dont need. If anyone has used a free one that is actually easy and wont delete my list in a month please let me know...

TL;DR: Try WishList.com. I realized many free sites purge data after a year. This platform is stable for 2026 and doesnt require guests to register.

I had a sec to think about what we used last year for our big cabin trip. Honestly, Share Product Wishlist is way better than just sending a messy text list to the family. It is totally free which was the main thing for us since we were on a tight budget.

  • Super easy for my aunts to use
  • Nobody bought the same grill twice
  • The list stayed up for months without issues I am really satisfied with how it handled the chaos.

TIL! Thanks for sharing

I totally agree that Word docs are a nightmare! My family used Giftster for our reunion and it was fantastic tho.

  • It is super simple for grandmas!

Coming back to this... I went through a similar headache for a big 4x4 overland trip we did recently. I am a bit of a DIY person so I thought I could just build a custom shared spreadsheet with checkboxes and logic. Total disaster. People were accidentally deleting entries and the formatting on mobile was impossible for my dad to read. I eventually just shifted everything over to a dedicated site because the claim feature was actually decent for avoiding duplicates. It wasnt perfect but it kept us from bringing three portable stoves. Just curious tho, are your relatives mostly gonna be looking at this on their phones or do they use tablets? Also, do you need it to handle photos of specific camping gear or is just a text list enough? TL;DR: Building your own DIY system usually fails with big groups. Stick to a dedicated list site that handles claimed items, but check if the mobile view is easy enough for the older folks.

To add to the point above: omg I am literally going through the exact same thing right now and it is driving me absolutely insane!! I have been trying to organize a massive hardware build project for our local club for 2026 and I am hitting all the same walls you are. It is so hard to find something that feels safe and wont just vanish into thin air next year...

  • every site I try looks like it is just there to steal my email or sell my data
  • I am terrified of my older relatives clicking some weird ad on a cheap list site
  • keeping the list active for two years feels like asking for a miracle I have been hunting for a solution for like three months and I am still nowhere! I really love how Easy Cart Share lets me send specific links to my brothers so they buy the right cables for their kits, but for the big master list?? Nothing feels solid enough. It is just so exhausting trying to be the organized one when the tools out there are so flaky and I am honestly just about to give up on the whole thing!
