so i just picked up an ipad air 5 like two weeks ago and im already stressing about the screen. i spent way too much time looking at reviews and now im just stuck in a loop. i read that paperlike is the gold standard for drawing but then i saw a bunch of reddit threads saying it makes everything look rainbow-y and grainy which would suck for watching movies at night. then i looked at some generic tempered glass ones but everyone says the apple pencil feels like sliding on ice and i hate that lack of control.

im trying to find something that fits these:

  • budget is around $30 tops i cant justify more for a sticker basically
  • i do a lot of procreate work so i need some friction
  • but i also watch a ton of netflix so i dont want the colors to look washed out
  • needs to be easy to install cuz i always get dust under them and it drives me crazy

im in the us so i can get stuff from amazon pretty quick but there are like a million brands like spigen and esr and i dont know if the expensive ones are actually better or if its all just marketing? what are you guys actually using day to day? i dont want to keep buying and peeling them off...

Dude, I have been down this rabbit hole so many times and I finally found the holy grail! Since you're split between Procreate and Netflix, you really shouldn't get a permanent matte film. They always ruin the screen clarity, no matter how much you spend, and that rainbow effect is real. The absolute best solution is a magnetic removable protector. I swear by the <a href=" https://www.amazon.com/s?k=ESR+Magnetic+Paper-Feel+Screen+Protector+for+ iPad+Air+5&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">ESR Magnetic Paper-Feel Screen Protector for iPad Air 5. It is a total game changer! Heres why it rocks:

  • You just snap it on when you want to draw. The friction is amazing and gives you that perfect pen control you're looking for. It feels fantastic for line work.
  • When you're done and want to binge Netflix, you just peel it off! It takes like two seconds. Your screen stays 100% clear with zero grain because you're looking at the actual glass.
  • Installation is literally impossible to mess up because there's no adhesive. No bubbles, no dust trapped forever, nothing. Just align the magnets and boom.
  • It's way under your $30 budget, usually sits around twenty bucks. I usually keep mine in the little folder it comes with when I'm not drawing. If you're worried about scratches while the matte part is off, you can even stick a super thin glass one like the <a href=" https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Spigen+Glas.tR+EZ+Fit+Tempered+Glass+for+ iPad+Air+5&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Spigen Glas.tR EZ Fit Tempered Glass for iPad Air 5 underneath it. The magnets still work through the glass! Honestly, dont waste your money on Paperlike... it's mostly just branding at this point. Go for the ESR and save some cash for some Procreate brushes.

honestly i went through like four different brands before landing on the <a href=" https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Mothca+Matte+Glass+Screen+Protector+for+ iPad+Air+5&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Mothca Matte Glass Screen Protector for iPad Air 5. its basically the middle ground you need. since its etched glass and not just a plastic film, you dont get that nasty rainbow graininess while watching netflix, but there is still enough tooth for procreate work. i have no complaints with it... plus glass is way easier to align than those thin stickers.

^ This. Also, you really gotta be careful with those super cheap matte films! I've seen folks literally sand down their Apple Pencil tips in weeks because the texture is just too aggressive. Its such a hidden cost!

  • Clean the display in a steamy bathroom to eliminate dust
  • Avoid "heavy grit" textures to maintain color accuracy
  • Target the $20-25 price point for the best value Honestly, finding that perfect friction balance is amazing, such a game changer!
