Hey everyone! I’m currently trying to transition my iPad into more of a 'daily driver' for my writing and design work, but I’ve quickly realized that the on-screen keyboard is a total bottleneck for productivity. I’m in the market for a high-quality external keyboard, but there are so many options out there—from folio cases to standalone Bluetooth boards—that it’s getting a bit overwhelming to choose.
I’m looking for something truly versatile. Ideally, it should be compatible across different models since I often swap between my iPad Pro at my desk and a smaller iPad Air when I'm traveling. I’ve looked at the Apple Magic Keyboard, but the price is pretty steep, and it's locked to specific sizes. I’m curious if anyone has found a reliable Bluetooth alternative that offers a great typing experience without that 'mushy' feel of cheap portable options. I really care about tactile feedback and key travel, and I’d much prefer something USB-C rechargeable rather than dealing with AA batteries.
Has anyone had long-term success with the Logitech MX Keys Mini, or perhaps a compact mechanical board? I want a setup that feels solid but doesn't weigh down my bag. What do you think is the absolute best external keyboard for an iPad right now in terms of typing feel and portability?
> I’m looking for something truly versatile. For your situation, basically folio cases are a trap cuz they're size-locked. Standalone Bluetooth boards are way better when swapping between a Pro and Air. I would suggest Logitech MX Keys Mini. It's usually under $100 and has great tactile feedback. If your looking for that mechanical feel, Keychron K3 Ultra-slim Wireless Mechanical Keyboard (Version 2) is a steal at $75. Its USB-C and super portable, but watch that battery life. gl
Just catching up on this thread and honestly, I feel u. I spent years trying to find the 'perfect' setup for my <a href=" https://www.amazon.com/s?k= iPad+Pro+and+Air&linkCode=osi&------123456890?5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">iPad Pro and Air, and I’ve learned that most folio cases are just... disappointing. They’re heavy and locked to one size, which is a total waste of money if you swap devices often. I’ve had issues with several 'portable' boards feeling like mushy sponges, but for your situation, I'd suggest looking at low-profile mechanicals. * NuPhy Air60 V2 Wireless Mechanical Keyboard: This is my current daily driver. It uses low-profile Gateron switches so it isn't chunky, but the tactile feedback is incredible. Plus, it's USB-C and super light.
* Satechi Slim X1 Bluetooth Backlit Keyboard: If you want something that feels like an Apple keyboard but actually has better travel and multi-device switching, this is it. Basically, standalone boards are way more versatile. Ngl, the Apple Magic Keyboard for iPad is overpriced and too restrictive. Stick with something that lets you type comfortably on any screen! gl!
Works great for me
I definitely agree that skipping the folio cases is the smartest move for your setup. I have been doing a lot of reading on this lately since I am also trying to get away from the on-screen typing struggle. It really feels like the market is divided between the big tech brands and the newer enthusiast companies. From my little bit of research, if you want that high-end feel without the mush, there are two main paths. You have the big names like Logitech that focus on features and easy switching, and then the boutique brands that focus almost entirely on how the keys feel under your fingers. It is a bit confusing to pick one tho!
