Wattage is often the primary focus, but what other PSU specifications should we scrutinize when building a system around the power-hungry RTX 5090? Factors like the number of PCIe connectors, the quality of internal components, and the presence of protective features like over-current protection (OCP) are often overlooked. How important are these factors for long-term system stability and performance? What specific features should we prioritize when choosing a PSU for the RTX 5090? Building on the earlier suggestion, i totally agree that those protections are basically non-negotiable. I was super worried about frying my card when i first started looking at parts, so i did a ton of research to find something safe but also affordable... tbh i spent like three weeks just reading reviews and checking spreadsheets. I actually ended up getting the MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 1000W 80+ Gold on sale and i am really satisfied with it so far. No coil whine or issues at all. It feels rock solid and didnt break the bank like some of the higher tier units I saw. A few things i found during my technical deep dive for staying on a budget:

  • definitely get something with a native 12VHPWR cable. Those adapters look sketchy and i feel way safer with a direct connection.
  • dont overpay for Platinum or Titanium ratings unless you leave your PC on 24/7. Gold is usually plenty and saves you fifty bucks easily which you can put toward more storage.
  • pay attention to the warranty length. If it has 10 years, they usually use the good internal components like Japanese capacitors which is what you want for peace of mind when running a card this expensive.

Beyond wattage, prioritize high-quality components, ample PCIe connectors (native 16-pin is ideal), and robust protections (OCP, OPP, etc.) for a stable RTX 5090 system. A quality PSU ensures consistent power delivery and safeguards your investment. Check forums for recommended models.
