Ugh, honestly I feel so lost right now. I spent the last three weeks watching youtube videos about building a pc and I thought I had everything figured out until I got to the power supply part. Why are there so many options?? Everyone keeps saying dont cheap out on the psu or my house will catch fire or something, but then my wallet is just crying. Im in the UK and I really dont want to spend more than 80-90 quid if I can help it because I still need to buy a decent monitor.

Basically Im building this mid-range machine, just for some 1440p gaming and maybe light video editing for my class. I have an rtx 4060 and a ryzen 5 processor. Someone told me I need 650w to be safe for future upgrades but I have no clue how to tell which ones are actually decent quality and which ones are just e-waste.

I feel like such a newbie asking this but:

  • Budget is strictly under 90 pounds
  • Needs to be 650w minimum
  • Modular would be nice because cable management looks like a nightmare
  • Must be quiet because my desk is right next to my bed

Is there anything reliable that wont blow up? Im so frustrated because every time I find one that looks okay, I read one review that says it died in a week and then I panic. I just want to finish this build by next weekend so I can actually play something. Does anyone have a specific model theyve actually used for a while and didnt have problems with? Or is 650w overkill and I should just get something else...

Re: "Like someone mentioned, you should definitely prioritize quality." - totally agree. If those others are out of stock, check out the MSI MPG A650GF 650W 80+ Gold Modular. I have used it in a few client builds and it is rock solid. My biggest tip? Dont force the cables, just take your time with the routing behind the tray. Youll be fine, just dont stress the small stuff!

Look, you really cant cut corners here. I have been building systems for years and the Seasonic Focus GX-650 650W 80+ Gold Fully Modular is the gold standard for reliability imo. It is incredibly stable and the fan curve is silent under most loads. Its definitely worth spending a few extra quid for peace of mind compared to the budget junk out there.

Honestly, don't sweat it. Everyone starts out worried about their pc exploding, but you'll be fine. I've used the Corsair RM650 650W 80+ Gold Fully Modular in a few builds over the years and it is rock solid. It is dead silent, fully modular, and fits your budget perfectly. I've never had one fail on me yet, and the cable management is a dream. Just grab that and you can stop stressing.

Like someone mentioned, you should definitely prioritize quality. I personally use the be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 650W 80+ Gold Modular and have been super satisfied with it. It is extremely quiet, which is perfect since my rig is near my bed too. Just remember to double check the clearance in your case before buying, but this one is solid and keeps things cool.
