Im starting to panic a little bit because I finally saved up enough for an RTX 4070 but now im totally stuck on the motherboard. My budget for the board is strictly around 150 to 180 bucks since I blew so much on the GPU and I need this build done by next weekend because my current laptop is basically a toaster and I have a huge project due for my gaming design class.
I spent like six hours reading reviews on Newegg and Reddit today. People keep suggesting the MSI B760 Tomahawk but then others say the VRMs might be overkill for my i5-13400 and I should just get a cheaper B760 board instead. Im just really worried about buying something that will bottleneck the card or have weird BIOS issues that I wont know how to fix. I saw some stuff about DDR4 vs DDR5 versions too and now Im second guessing everything because I dont want to end up with the wrong RAM.
Is it actually worth saving the extra money on a cheaper board or should I just commit to the more expensive one to be safe? Im in the UK if that changes what parts are actually in stock right now... really dont want to mess this up.
Honestly, dont sweat the motherboard too much. You wont bottleneck an RTX 4070 with a decent B760, but you should pick your RAM path before buying anything because you cant mix them.
^ This. Also, honestly, I feel your pain. I had a nightmare experience last year when I cheaped out on an entry-level board and it literally fried my VRM while I was running a basic simulation for class. It was not a good time. If you have a project due, save yourself the stress and avoid the ultra-budget boards that look like toys. Theyre just not built for sustained loads. Since you are rocking a 13400 and need stability, you really should look at these instead:
Regarding what #1 said about not sweating the motherboard, i honestly think thats risky advice when you have a big project due. If you get a cheap board with bad cooling and it dies mid-render, you are stuck. Ive had issues with entry-level boards throttling under load, which is super annoying. Check these out instead:
