My 2019 MacBook Pro finally decided to give up the ghost right in the middle of a massive branding project and honestly Im freaking out. Ive been using Adobe Creative Cloud for like seven years now but suddenly my screen started flickering and the whole thing just shuts down if I try to render anything heavy in After Effects. Im stuck in Chicago and I need something reliable by Friday because this client is super impatient and I dont have time to wait for a custom build.

Im looking at the new M3 Pro or Max chips but I keep reading mixed reviews about RAM throttling and whether 16GB is even enough anymore for what I do. My budget is around 3k but I could stretch it a bit if it actually prevents me from having another meltdown in six months. Should I just bite the bullet on a maxed out 14 inch or is there a Windows alternative that actually handles color accuracy as well as the Retina displays? I really cant afford to be guessing on hardware right now so if anyone has recent experience with these newer machines please let me know which one is actually worth the money...

Honestly, 16GB of RAM is basically dead for professional After Effects work in 2024. If you're doing heavy branding and motion graphics, you need to be at 32GB minimum or you will be pulling your hair out again by next week. I've been running the Apple MacBook Pro M3 Max 14-inch 36GB RAM and it honestly eats everything I throw at it without breaking a sweat.

  • skip the base 16GB models entirely
  • aim for the M3 Max chip if you render complex comps often
  • avoid windows laptops unless you grab a dedicated calibrator like the Datacolor SpyderX Pro because most built-in panels just arent reliable enough for print work without extra tweaking. Just grab the 36GB M3 Max and thank yourself later. Good luck with the deadline.

Man, that sounds stressful! Are you mostly tethered to a desk or working on the go? You should check out the ASUS ProArt Studiobook 16 OLED for insane color accuracy.

Man, that sounds like a nightmare. If you need something today, honestly just go grab whatever base M3 Max you can find in stock. I think chasing the absolute perfect spec is just gonna stress you out more.

  • dont bother with 16GB, its just not gonna cut it for motion stuff
  • check local stores so you dont have to wait for shipping
  • keep a solid external drive for assets Really, just get the RAM and breathe.
