So my old desktop literally just smoked itself and I start my CS program this coming Monday so I need a laptop like yesterday. My budget is tight around $550-600 max. I was thinking a used ThinkPad T14 since I know my way around a shell and need solid Linux support but then I saw some decent deals on Vivobooks and now Im second guessing everything. My logic was prioritize 16GB RAM for docker and VMs but these budget consumer laptops feel so flimsy compared to enterprise gear. Is the build quality on a refurb machine worth the older specs or should I just go for something newer with a better screen? Really need to make a move tonight...

I spent years on a Dell Latitude 5420 i5-1145G7 16GB RAM and it was rock solid.

I once tried a budget consumer model and the chassis flex was insane when typing. Trying to find a HP EliteBook 840 G8 i5-1145G7 16GB RAM might be a better move since the thermals are way more consistent. Quick tip: make sure to verify the panel is IPS and not TN, and always check the battery cycle count so you dont get stuck with a dud.

Grab a refurb Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 Ryzen 5 16GB RAM.

- great linux drivers Been super satisfied with mine since it handles VMs like a champ.
