Im building a pc for my brother by next weekend and im totally stuck on the cpu choice. Ive been reading forums for hours and now my brain is just mush. I saw a lot of people pushing the i3-12100F for super cheap builds but then others say the i5-12400F is the absolute bare minimum for gaming these days if you dont want it to choke. Im in the UK and need to keep the chip under 150 quid since I still have to find a decent deal on a GPU and RAM. My main constraints are:

  • Budget: Under 150 for the cpu.
  • Use case: Mostly 1080p gaming and maybe some light video editing for his school projects.
  • Timeline: Need to order by Tuesday to have it built by Saturday.

Does the 12400F really make that much of a difference compared to the i3 or am I just overthinking the bottleneck stuff? I dont want to spend extra if I dont have to, but I also dont want it to be obsolete in six months. Should I just grab the i5 and call it a day or is there something else I missed... really need to make a decision fast before I lose my mind.

Honestly, just snag the Intel Core i5-12400F 6-Core 2.5GHz if you can swing it. The extra two cores really help with those school video projects and it wont choke nearly as fast as an i3 in modern titles. The 12100F is fine, but for longevity, the i5 is a safer bet that wont feel obsolete in a few months. Definitely worth the small price jump to save yourself the headache later.
