So I finally landed this massive gig editing some high-end stuff for a travel agency here in London and they're sending me 8K raw files from a RED camera which is way beyond what my old setup can handle. Ive been editing professionally for like 8 years now and usually my i9-10900K is a beast but man, it is Choking on this timeline even with proxies. I'm super hyped for the work but I gotta upgrade like yesterday because the first delivery is due next Tuesday.
I’ve always been an Intel guy because of the QuickSync support for H.264/H.265 encoding which is basically a life saver for my workflow. I was looking at the i9-14900K since I have about £650 set aside just for the chip but then I started reading all these weird reports about voltage issues and stability problems with the high-end 14th gen stuff and now I'm second guessing everything. I need this to be stable because I cant have the system crashing mid-render when I'm on a deadline. Is it better to just grab a 13900K and save a few bucks or is the 14th gen refresh actually worth it for the extra clock speeds? Also is the i7-14700K actually competitive enough for heavy 8K rendering or am I gonna regret not going for the full i9?
> basically had to spend a few hours in the bios Like someone mentioned, power limits are vital. Im really happy with the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-Core Processor tbh, its plenty fast and way easier to keep stable.
> basically had to spend a few hours in the bios Like someone mentioned, those tweaks are key. I recall a colleague struggling with random shutdowns on a huge timeline until he lowered the power limits... not sure if thats a universal fix for 8K tho.
honestly I went through this exact stress recently. After picking up the flagship model, the speed boost for 8k was massive compared to my old setup. I did have those stability scares though... basically had to spend a few hours in the bios tuning the power draw to keep it from crashing mid render. Its been a total beast once I got it dialed in tho, definitely wouldnt go for anything lower tier for 8k raw.
