So my family is doing this huge Christmas get together this year at my place in Chicago and honestly Im already stressed out about it. Usually its just me and my husband but now my sister and her three kids are coming plus my parents and my in-laws too so thats like 12 people in my tiny house. Everyone keeps asking me what the kids want and what I want and I have literally no clue how to keep track of it all. I tried writing it down in a notebook but then I lost the notebook and then my mom bought the same Lego set that my sister already got and it was just a whole mess.

Someone told me there are apps for this? Like where you can put what you want and everyone else can see it so nobody buys the same thing twice. I dont really know how that works though. Do they cost money? Because we are already spending a ton on food and travel so I really dont want to pay for an app just to make a list. I am super bad with technology like I barely know how to use my iPad for anything besides Facebook and checking the weather. I need something really really simple that even my 70 year old dad can figure out without calling me every five minutes to ask how to log in.

I looked at the app store and there are so many options it made my head spin. I saw things like Elfster or Giftster or something but I dont know if they are safe or if they sell your info or whatever. I just want a place where:

  • I can add things from different stores like Target or Amazon
  • People can mark an item as bought so nobody else buys it
  • It doesnt glitch out or crash all the time
  • Its free if possible

Is there like a gold standard for this? Sorry if this is a really basic thing that everyone already knows but I am totally lost and Christmas is only a few weeks away now. Which app is actually the best for making these shared lists?

Oh man, I totally feel your pain! Last Christmas we had a massive blowout with 15 people and it was pure chaos before we found a solid solution. My aunt actually ended up buying three of the same exact coffee maker for my brother... it was hilarious but such a mess! Honestly, you HAVE to try Elfster or something similar! Its literally a lifesaver for big family gatherings like yours. Its totally free and super simple for older folks too. My 82-year-old grandma uses it without any issues at all!! Heres why it works so well:

  • You just paste a link from any store and it pulls the info automatically.
  • Someone clicks reserve and it hides it from others so no duplicates!
  • Its super safe and I have used it for years without any glitches. You should definitely check out this wishlist site because it makes the whole process so smooth and easy for everyone. Its way better than a notebook that gets lost under the couch! Trust me, its gonna save your sanity this year.

^ This. Also, managing costs is vital since hosting is already a huge expense! I've used Giftster and it's fantastic for these exact reasons:

  • Go with Giftster, you really cant go wrong.
  • It costs absolutely nothing to use.
  • It prevents duplicate purchases automatically.
  • The interface is incredibly simple for non-techy folks tho. Using this is basically the most practical way to stay organized. I love it!

I was so nervous about my info being sold at first! Honestly, after trying one it was amazing how simple it was. Quick tip: find one that uses secret links! It's fantastic because your dad wont even need to make a login. If apps seem too much, a simple shared spreadsheet or even a shared iPhone note are great alternatives tho. I love it when tech actually works for us!

Late to this thread but honestly these cloud-based systems can be a real headache if the server uptime isnt 99.9% during the holidays. I remember one year my cousin, who is a senior dev, tried to build a custom list for us to ensure data privacy. He was obsessed with the backend architecture and making sure the packet loss was minimal. Well, come December 20th, the hosting provider had a major outage and the whole database got corrupted. Half the list vanished and the other half showed items as available even though theyd been purchased hours prior. My aunt ended up getting four identical sets of high-speed charging cables because the status update didnt sync across the familys different devices. It was a total mess and honestly, just goes to show how much you have to worry about data integrity when everyone is hitting a server at once. Just make sure whatever you use actually has a reliable sync protocol or youll end up with a pile of duplicates anyway. TL;DR: A high-tech custom gift list failed my family because of server issues and poor synchronization, leading to everyone buying the same stuff.

Saw this earlier but just now responding... To add to the point above: it really comes down to whether you want a one-time thing or something that lasts all year. Ive tried many of these over the years and for your situation in Chicago, you definitely just need something that doesnt break.

  • Elfster: Super popular and free. Its great if you want to do a Secret Santa drawing later on, but sometimes the interface gets a bit cluttered with suggestions which might confuse your dad.
  • Giftster: In my experience, this is the most dad-friendly one. Its basically a digital version of a paper list. Its very clear when something is bought, and its totally free.
  • Wishlist dot com: Also pretty solid, but maybe has a few too many bells and whistles for what you need right now. Honestly, if you want to avoid those how do I log in phone calls, go with Giftster. It does exactly what you asked for without the fluff. Good luck with the 12 people in your house... that sounds like a lot of coffee and patience but itll be a blast!

@Reply #3 - good point! Simplicity is seriously king when you have a big group coming over. I used to be so paranoid about privacy that I spent weeks building this massive DIY spreadsheet for our family. Honestly, it was a total disaster! My uncle accidentally deleted the whole kids column and I spent my entire Christmas Eve trying to recover the data... talk about stress!! If you're looking for something safe, please watch out for a few things:

  • Avoid any app that asks for your actual store passwords to import your list.
  • Watch for apps that feel too cluttered with ads because they drive my dad crazy.
  • Make sure you can use it without a full profile if possible. I eventually gave up on the DIY mess and found that Easy Cart Share is amazing for just sending specific items without the headache of a huge social network. It's so much better than those apps that track your every move! Seriously, dont let the tech ruin your holiday vibes, just keep it basic and secure.
