My old laptop literally caught fire last week during a zoom call so I had to rush out and grab a new MacBook Air M3 to survive my upcoming final exams. Im stressing out because I spent way too much money on the machine itself and now im scared im gonna damage it or just be super unproductive without the right gear. I spent hours reading forums and some people swear by these fancy aluminum vertical stands while others say they just scratch the finish and you should use a cooling pad instead but my desk in this tiny dorm room is already so crowded I barely have room for a coffee cup. I also saw a ton of posts about mechanical keyboards but isnt that overkill for just writing papers and watching netflix? I have like maybe 100 bucks left to spend on accessories before my next paycheck and I really dont wanna waste it on junk that I wont actually use. What is actually essential for a student setup that isnt just total marketing fluff?

Man, sorry your last laptop kicked the bucket like that, sounds like a nightmare. Honestly, keep it simple since you're cramped for space. Forget the fancy mechanical boards, they take up way too much room and are just gonna annoy your roommates. Instead, grab a solid hub because these new MacBooks lack ports. I used to use the Anker 565 USB-C Hub 11-in-1 but unfortunately, the build quality on the newer batches isnt as good as expected and I had issues with the HDMI port flickering. Better to just get a simple Satechi Multi-Port Adapter V2 4K HDMI which is way more reliable. Also, spend the rest of that budget on a high-quality sleeve like the Incase Icon Sleeve for MacBook Air to keep it safe in your backpack. Dont overthink the stand stuff, just keep it on the desk.

^ This. Also, honestly, stop worrying about cooling pads since the M3 chip is super efficient and barely warms up anyway. Since your desk is tiny, definitely grab a decent Logitech MX Anywhere 3S Compact Performance Mouse to save your wrists during those long study sessions. It tracks on glass too, which is perfect for cramped dorm desks. Just dont overthink the gear, you really just need a solid mouse and you are golden.
