As a content creator, I need an SSD that can handle large video and audio files. I’ll be using it for 4K video editing, and quick transfers between devices are essential. What’s the best SSD for creatives who need fast speeds and reliability?

In my experience, raw speed numbers are mostly marketing fluff. For 4K editing, you need to look at sustained performance and endurance ratings. I've tried many drives over the years and these are the ones I trust for not failing mid-project:

  • Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB NVMe SSD
  • This is incredibly reliable for heavy workloads. The firmware is stable and it doesnt drop off in speed as quickly as others when it gets full.
  • SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB PCIe NVMe
  • It runs significantly cooler than most Gen4 drives. Heat is the number one killer of SSDs and performance, so this is a safer bet for long render sessions.
  • SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 2TB Portable SSD
  • For moving files between devices, this is the way to go. It supports both Thunderbolt and USB, and its ruggedized which is basically a requirement if you're traveling. Always check for a DRAM cache. Cheap drives skip it, but for music and video, youll notice the lag immediately once you start layering tracks or scrubbing 4K footage. Also, look at the TBW (Total Bytes Written) spec... higher is always better for content creation because we write and delete huge files constantly. Dont risk your data on a drive with a low endurance rating just to save a few bucks.

I swear by the Samsung 990 Pro (1TB/2TB) for video editing. The PCIe 4.0 speeds (7,500 MB/s read) make scrubbing 4K/8K footage buttery smooth. Pair it with a high-capacity SATA SSD (like the Crucial MX500 4TB) for project archives. NVMe for active work, SATA for storage—this combo keeps my workflow efficient without breaking the bank. Just ensure your motherboard supports PCIe 4.0 to max out performance!
