I recently acquired a RTX 4090 GPU, which necessitates an upgrade from my current 650W PSU. I'm now faced with a decision between two options: an 850W platinum-rated PSU or a 1000W gold-rated PSU. Given the power requirements of the RTX 4090 and the efficiency differences between platinum and gold-rated PSUs, I'm seeking advice on which option would be more suitable for my setup. Any insights or recommendations based on personal experiences or technical knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance!

I suggest you to get a 1000 W PSU for RTX 4090, and below are some top recommended ones:

@Matthew0000 RM1000x is a very good PSU overall, I have it for several years, never has any problem.

I use ASUS ROG Thor 1000W Platinum II PSU, while the price is a bit expensive, the 80+ Platinum efficiency is a testament to its quality, ensuring optimal power usage and reduced heat generation. Worth the price.

This one: Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1000W https://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Toughpower-Crossfire-Connector-PS-TPD-1000FNFAGU-4/dp/B0BF3R83W8/?tag=6890-20

Just search Amazon or Newegg for any 1000W PSUs are OK: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=1000w+psu&tag=6890-20

From a technical standpoint, the RTX 4090 has a TDP of 450W, but it can spike much higher during intense workloads. When you factor in the rest of your system components and potential overclocking, an 850W PSU might be cutting it close. The 1000W gold-rated PSU would provide a more comfortable buffer. The efficiency difference between gold and platinum is typically only about 2-3%, which translates to a very small real-world difference in power consumption. In this case, the extra capacity of the 1000W unit outweighs the slight efficiency advantage of the platinum rating.

I used Corsair RM1000e for about one year. Never had any issue.
