Im building my first pc for 4k gaming and work and feel totally lost looking at these power supplies. Ive got a 4090 and a 14900k but have no clue how many watts I actually need to keep it from exploding lol. My budget is pretty flexible but what brand is safe to use?
> Im building my first pc for 4k gaming and work Honestly go with the Corsair AX1600i 1600W Titanium if you want zero noise, or the be quiet! Dark Power Pro 13 1300W Titanium for total reliability.
Regarding what #3 said about the 1600W units, honestly, that is total overkill unless you are running multiple GPUs or some insane overclock. You really dont need that much wattage. I have been running my own 4090 and 14900k setup on the EVGA SuperNOVA 1200 P3 1200W 80+ Platinum and its been solid. Efficiency is the name of the game here. You want to stay in that sweet spot where the fans dont even spin up half the time. If you want something even more modern with the native 12VHPWR cable, look at the Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1200W 80+ Gold. It handles the transient spikes these new cards throw at the rails like a champ. Dont overthink the wattage number too much, just grab a reliable Tier A unit and you will be perfectly fine.
Honestly with that power hungry hardware you really dont wanna cut corners. You definitely need at least 1000W to stay safe, maybe 1200W if you plan on overclocking. I personally feel way better using a reputable brand for peace of mind.
> Im building my first pc for 4k gaming and work and feel totally lost looking at these power supplies. Coming back to this thread, honestly, be careful. I tried a unit from a well-known brand recently, the MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 1000W 80 Plus Gold, but unfortunately the coil whine was unbearable under load. It was just not as good as expected for a high-end rig like yours. If you want something reliable that wont disappoint, stick with the Corsair RM1200x Shift 1200W 80 Plus Gold. The side-mounted connectors are actually genius for cable management. It handles the 14900k power spikes way better than the MSI unit I had issues with. Just dont cheap out here, the 4090 pulls a lot of juice.
