Finally building my 7800X3D gaming rig this weekend in Chicago and stuck on the board. Budget is $200.

I saw people love the Gigabyte Aorus Elite AX but then read about nasty coil whine, and the MSI Tomahawk apparently takes forever to boot. Which B650 is actually the best pick for stability?

Coming back to this, I helped a buddy set up a rig with the ASUS TUF Gaming B650-Plus WIFI recently. I'm usually super cautious with new platforms, but this one has been rock solid.

  • VRM cooling is decent for the price
  • BIOS updates fixed those early voltage scares
  • Fits right under your $200 budget Basically just a reliable, boring board that works without much drama.

Re: "Honestly, I'm super satisfied with the ASRock B650..."

  • I saw this thread late but really wanted to chime in because my experience with AM5 boards has been kinda frustrating so far. It is a bit disappointing that we have to choose between nasty coil whine or 45-second boot times in 2024. I actually spent weeks troubleshooting a build with the Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX V2 and ended up returning it. The VRM specs look great on paper, but that buzzing sound was just a dealbreaker for me when the room is quiet. Here is how the others I tested stack up:
  • MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi: Extremely solid power delivery for the 7800X3D, but yeah, the boot times are tragic. Even with the latest BIOS and Memory Context Restore turned on, it is just not as snappy as I would expect for a 200 dollar board.
  • ASUS TUF Gaming B650-Plus WiFi: I had high hopes for this one, but the RAM compatibility was a nightmare at launch. It is better now after updates, but honestly the PCB quality feels a bit flimsy compared to the older AM4 TUF boards I have used in the past.
  • ASRock B650E PG Riptide WiFi: This is what I finally stuck with. It is slightly over your 200 buck limit sometimes, but having PCIe 5.0 support is a massive plus for future-proofing your GPU later on. I would lean towards ASRock or even the Tomahawk if you dont mind the slow start. Just make sure you grab a kit of G.Skill Flare X5 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 since that seems to be the sweet spot for stability on basically every B650 board right now. If you run into any weird BIOS issues during the build, just hit me up...

Honestly, I'm super satisfied with the ASRock B650 Pro RS WiFi ATX. Boot times are way faster than my buddies MSI rig, and it works well with the 7800X3D. No coil whine issues either, which is huge. Its well under your $200 limit so you can save some cash for games. Just a solid, stable board imo.
