I got this crazy fast Ryzen 9 7950X chip for a new build but I have no idea where to start with the motherboard. Honestly sorry if this is a dumb question but what do all the letters mean? I see X670 and B650 and I'm totally lost. I'm in London and my budget is around 300 to 400 pounds for the board. I need it for editing 4k video and gaming so it needs to be reliable. I'm hoping to build it this Saturday.

  • which one is easiest to set up?
  • do I need a specific one for lots of storage?
  • what brands should I avoid?

I'm just really confused by the specs...

Honestly, dont stress too much about the letters. B650 is the mid-range and X670 is the high-end stuff. Since you are doing 4k editing with a 7950X, you mainly want a board with solid power delivery so it doesnt throttle under load. You dont actually need to spend the full 400 quid to get something great. A few points to help:

  • X670 boards usually have more lanes for fast NVMe storage, which helps a ton for video editing scratch disks.
  • Setup is basically the same across brands, but boards with a pre-installed IO shield are way less fiddly during the build.
  • I generally stick with MSI or ASUS for reliability lately. Check these out:
  • MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi AM5 ATX is a total workhorse and way under your budget.
  • ASUS TUF Gaming X670E-Plus WiFi ATX is perfect if you want those extra PCIe 5.0 features for future upgrades. Stick to B650 if you want to save cash for extra RAM, or go X670 if you plan on adding tons of SSDs later.
