Hey everyone, I'm trying to save a video I saw on a Reddit comment page to my computer for offline viewing. I've tried a few browser extensions, but they don't seem to work when the video is embedded within the comments. Is there a reliable method or tool you recommend for downloading videos directly from a Reddit comment page? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Ugh, tell me about it. I’ve been dealing with the exact same thing lately and it’s honestly such a headache. Reddit’s video player is a total resource hog and whenever I try to grab a clip from the comments, it just breaks or the quality ends up looking like garbage. I spent way too much time yesterday trying to find a fix that actually keeps the performance high without crashing my browser. Tbh you should just check YouTube for a quick tutorial. I saw a really solid video about this a couple weeks ago that explains the best ways to bypass the DASH issues everyone is talking about. Just search for reddit video download guide 2024 or something similar and it’s usually the first or second result that pops up. Way easier than trying to troubleshoot it here imo.

Saw this earlier but just getting back to my desk. Most people here are recommending web-based rippers or extensions, which are fine for a quick fix, but the technical reason those videos are a pain is because Reddit uses DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP). Basically, the video and audio are kept in totally separate streams. If you want a real DIY solution that doesnt involve dodging malware, you should look into yt-dlp. Its a command-line powerhouse that fetches the manifest file and uses ffmpeg to stitch the streams together perfectly. It gives you way more control over the final file container and metadata than a random website will. To recap what others said:

  • Use the rvideodownload site if youre in a hurry.
  • The chrome extension is a solid middle ground.
  • Avoid free sites with too many buttons as they are usually just ad traps. I usually dump all my archived clips onto my Western Digital Black 5TB P10 Game Drive because high quality rips start eating space fast. Its way more reliable than relying on an extension that might break next time Reddit updates their API.

Tbh I’m still pretty new to this stuff but I’ve been trying to figure out the DIY way lately. It’s kinda scary though because there are so many things that can go wrong. Anyway, here’s a couple things I’ve noticed you should probably watch out for: - Be super careful with those 'free' sites that have like ten different download buttons. Half of them are usually just ads or weird software you dont want on ur computer.
- Sometimes when u try to save the video yourself, the audio is missing. It’s basically because Reddit stores them separately I think? It's really annoying and hard to fix if u aren't a pro.
- Don't give random extensions full access to ur browser data just to grab one video. Honestly, it's not worth the risk to ur privacy just for some clip. So basically just be careful where u click! Is there like, a way to do it without using any outside tools at all just to stay safe?
