I'm looking to upgrade my Steam Deck's storage and want to know what the best SD card options are. I've heard that loading times can be longer when using an SD card compared to the internal storage, but I'm curious if the performance is still acceptable. Are there specific speed ratings or brands that are recommended?
The Samsung Pro Plus seems to be the sweet spot for performance and price, with loading times nearly matching the internal SSD. For budget options, the SanDisk Ultra is just slightly slower but much cheaper, now available up to 1.5TB.
OceanBreeze is spot on about the price to performance ratio. Honestly, I've tried so many cards over the years with different handhelds and the Deck really hits a bottleneck where the super expensive ones dont even matter. I stumbled on this thread and had to chime in because I went through a whole phase of timing my load screens with a stopwatch like a total nerd. I ended up settling on the Lexar PLAY 1TB microSDXC UHS-I for my main library. It is usually way cheaper than the SanDisk equivalent and ngl, I cant tell the difference when I am actually playing. Another solid budget pick I have used is the Silicon Power 1TB MicroSD Card Superior. I was skeptical at first because of the low price, but it has been a workhorse for my lighter emulated games and some AAA titles too. Unless you are moving hundreds of gigabytes of files back and forth every single day, you are better off getting more capacity for less money. Just stay away from those sketchy no-name brands on Amazon tho... those are just asking for corrupted save files.
A 1TB SanDisk Extreme Pro offers top performance, but the regular Extreme model is more cost-effective. Most users won't notice the Pro's speed advantages in everyday use, making the standard Extreme version a smarter choice that delivers excellent performance at a better price point.
