So I finally pulled the trigger on a new camera - went with the Lumix S5IIX - and now I realized my old laptop is basically a brick when I try to scrub through 10-bit 4K footage. Its so laggy I want to pull my hair out lol. I'm super excited to actually start my freelance gig but I need a desktop build like yesterday. My budget for the whole tower is around $2500 and I'm planning to head to Micro Center in Chicago next Friday to grab everything.

I've been doing a ton of reading and I'm honestly torn. I saw that the i9-14900K is supposedly the king of performance but then I saw a bunch of videos about those stability issues and crashing problems with high-end 13th and 14th gen chips which is kind of terrifying when you're dropping that much cash. On the other hand some people say the i7-14700K is the sweet spot because of the extra E-cores this year and it runs a bit cooler but will I notice a huge difference in Premiere Pro export times? I really want that Quicksync for smooth playback but I cant decide if I should go all out for the i9 or play it safe with the i7... what do you guys think is the actual best move for a heavy 4K workflow right now?

Man, congrats on the S5IIX! That camera is an absolute beast for the price, but those 10-bit files will totally wreck an old system. Been in your exact shoes a few months ago when building my dedicated editing rig. Choosing the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-Core 3.4GHz LGA 1700 was the best decision ever and I seriously love it! The performance for the price is just insane, especially for Premiere. The main reason to go i7 over i9 is really about the heat and stability stuff you mentioned. Saving a couple hundred bucks on the CPU let me dump way more into the parts that actually make a difference in your timeline:

  • Put that extra cash toward 64GB of fast RAM like the G.Skill Flare X5 64GB DDR5-6000. 4K footage loves memory.
  • Use a dedicated scratch drive. Grabbing the Samsung 990 Pro 1TB NVMe Gen4 just for my cache was life-changing for scrubbing.
  • Make sure you get a beefy cooler like the DeepCool LT720 360mm AIO because these chips still run hot when you're rendering. QuickSync is basically magic for 10-bit playback, so staying with Intel is definitely the right move for video work, ngl. Honestly, you're gonna be shocked at how fast it feels compared to your old laptop... it's literally night and day! If you need help picking out a motherboard or a GPU that fits the budget, just let me know. Love talkin' shop about this stuff!

I'd go for the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-Core 3.4GHz LGA 1700. It's way safer regarding those crashing issues and the performance gap is minimal. Let me know if you need board help too!
